McGill or USC; Thanks for Helping.

The short version is basically that McGill is gonna be like $7000 and USC is going to be $50K a year. Is the price difference worth it?

The long: Now my parents can pay for either school, after all the reason that USC is so expensive is that we did not qualify for any aid. However, we are not that much about above the aid line and the job security is not 100%. Not that my parents will be unemployed, but that pay cuts may occur. So the money is a pretty big factor.

Since I'm not really sure of a major, it's hard for me to compare schools. I think I will eventually go to grad school for business, but don't necessarily want to major in business undergrad. I was looking at international relations, economics, maybe some biology related courses. So which school is stronger in these faculties? It is basically the colleges of arts and letters for both schools so maybe which one of those is stronger?

Another issue is job placement. I would hate to have to work in Canada after college, so would it be harder to find a job in the US if I go to McGill? Are there good work opportunities in the business field for McGill?

Thanks for any help in answering.

seriously??? McGIll…no question…

That was helpful. Could I have a why?

USC isn’t worth an extra $160,000+. You will be getting at least as good as an education at McGill, while being exposed to an incredibly different environment that you can’t find anywhere in the US. What are you looking for in a college experience besides good academics?

Here is a thread I started on CC under McGill last year. There is more info there than you care to read probably but many of your questions can be answered there.

Myself and two other McGill alumni responded to questions over the course of six months. I am an American alumnus of McGill Desautels. Are you a dual or Canadian citizen?

McGill- ranked one of the best schools in the world! Seriously, this is a bit of a no brainer.

I’m looking for a stronger school spirit but that’s not gonna be a favored for my parents. They are more numbers oriented.

I know the prestige of mcgill, but I have also seen numerous threads and stories of bad job placement at mcgill, bad grad school placement. The fact of the matter is that slot of mcgills prestige comes from it being a top school in canada, but Canada is not very competitive academically. I will take a look at the thread, but as it’s in the McGill forum, won’t it be biased?

And I am a dual citizen.

Also the end fact is that while I know it is a good school, I simply have no desire to end up working in canada. I have lived in Montreal for seven years, had fun, but would rather live in the us. So what are realistically the chances of me getiing back into the states for graduate school/work?

Of course it is biased!

If you want your parents to pay $160,000 for you to enjoy school spirit at USC, go ahead!

Usually on this type of thread the more expensive school is way more prestigious. In this case it’s the more prestigious school that’s way less expensive. McGill will be VERY impressive to American grad schools.

Well this seems pretty unanimous. I guess southern California is not as good of a school as I thought.

What about job placement though? I know that in order to get into good bussiness grad schools in have to have a couple of years of work experience. Are there those kinds of oppurtunitites at mcgill? Mine you I will probably have a major from the school of arts, not dessautels.

I’m a McGill student now - absolutely hate it and am currently trying to transfer to nyu or USC. My friends who have already graduated do okay, but it’s difficult to find good internships/job placement in the US. Its possible but the name won’t open as many doors as you think.

Could you elaborate on why you hate it or what specifics your friends have said?

In case you haven’t heard, no one is getting jobs these days! One of the other parents recently posted that their child who graduated in engineering two years ago from one of the better programs in the US is still looking for work.

All my Canadian friends here in the DC area do their level best to send their bi-national kids to Canada to college because of the price differential. If your parents really truly can afford to pay the difference, then you are fortunate. But from my perspective, a temporarily unemployed McGill grad and some $160,000 in the bank looks a lot better than a temporarily unemployed grad of USC and no money left in the bank. Ask your parents if they will consider helping you pay for grad school or just generally get started in life if you keep your undergrad expenses low.

@CityfilmTran: Based on your posting history and screen name, you want to transfer to USC or NYU for film studies. No wonder you don’t like McGill, they don’t offer your desired major.

Poor college search on your part or you completely changed your academic interests after enrolling.

@Tom - changed interests last year when I had opportunity to work on film set, but even if I were sticking with the same major I would look at many other options.
