Mcgill or UVA

I have to decide between UVA and McGill. I would like to hear people's opinions on what they think is the best choice. UVA is one of the top undergraduate business schools in the US, and so is Mcgill in Canada. I would enter the business school in Mcgill straight away, but id have to study in the college of arts and sciences for my first year if I decide to go to UVA. I would really like some feedback in terms of pros and cons to help me make a decision. Thank youu

I have posted info re: McGill Management under the “Ask a McGill Alumnus” thread here. I have only been to UVa once when I visited Charlottesville and Monticello so I do not have specific knowledge about their business program. I believe UVa has separate undergraduate and graduate business schools, though.

At McGill Desautels, even though you are directly admitted to Management, your freshman year courses will be in Arts and Sciences. These are mostly the foundation courses fior business study: math, economics, psychology, sociology, English etc. This is the normal practice at most business schools in the US and Canada. If you have AP credits etc. you will be exempted from some of these courses and may be able to take management courses in freshman year. At UVa, are you guaranteed admission to the business school for sophomore year or would you have to apply during freshman year?

As for the rest of your university experience, the differences between McGill and UVa are enormous. Charlottesville is a nice college town in an incredibly beautiful area of the country. The nearest big city is Washington and that is a fair distance away. Montreal on the other hand…is Montreal! Both McGill and UVa are publicly funded schools so a common complaint at McGill: large classes, would likely be the case at UVa too. It comes down to what type of out of the classroom experience you are looking for: small town versus big city.

For what it’s worth, the closest I ever came to being “mugged” was on the downtown mall is Charlottesville. When I ignored the request of a panhandler for a handout, he grabbed hold of my arm and wouldn’t let go. A security guard chased him off. I guess that being in a small city, I let my guard down. In Boston or New York or even in Montreal I would not have been so surprised but in Charlottesville!

If you have not visited both schools, you should ASAP.

By the way, the dean of management at McGill, Peter Todd, was previously Associate Dean at UVa McIntire:

You may want to email him at the link and ask him directly!

this is the best way I can put it. Both my parents went to UVA, my uncle was a law professor there…and where am i going?..MCGILL

brown14 do you live in virginia?

yup and i STILL turned down what would have been a tiny sum of money to go to uva

did you happen to go to the rendezvous thing about a month ago near Washington?

no i didnt lol sorry im guessin u thought i met u

yeah, something like that

How do the two compare in terms of law school placement and internship opportunites related to law/international relations.

once you get that high on the quality of education scale, getting great grades at either of these schools produces relatively the same results and its difficult to compare without actual statistics
