would you consider mcgill a prestigious school? do others in the USA/Canada regard it as difficult to get into? (i.e. employers, people in general). just curious, because half the people i talk to here in CT know what and where it is and think its good, whereas the other half have no clue what it is, and ask me skeptically "is that a good school?"

McGill is prestigious in academia and in northeastern parts of the US.

mcgill is largely unknown in the US. It is roughly around 50-60 in the world, compared to an average US state school.

This known/unknown comment from econgrad is misleading.

If you ask 10 people on the street in New York you might get 10 unknowns. If you ask 10 HR people or hiring managers from large corporations in New York you are going to get a lot of knowns.

And they are the ones who matter.

I donno, I live outside NYC and Iāve known about Mcgill since I was in high school at least. When I was growing up it had the reputation (accurately or not) of being the best college in Canada, and Quebec as you know is just above New York. It is a straight shot within 8 hour drive up I 87, consequently many people from here have visited Quebec on vacation, at one time or another. I knew good students from here of my generation who attended McGill, and I know professionals who attended there and live around here now. So it doesnāt seem very unknown around here to me.

I agree, it all depends on whom you ask and where. I live in the Los Angeles area, and work in a well-respected, international law firm here in Los Angeles. Even though the āman on the streetā in this area would not recognize the McGill name, most of the attorneys at our firm, who have either attended ivy-league caliber schools and/or have children who attend(ed) them, know of McGill, and think highly of it.

Additionally, we vacation every summer in the Boston/Maine areas, and the McGill name is very well known there, even by āthe man on the street.ā

Itās all relative. Compared to the elite American schools, McGill canāt compare. Compared to the majority of other Canadian schools, McGill is prestigious. But lots of people even in Canada still havenāt heard of it, whereas youād be hard-pressed to find an adult in the US who hadnāt at least heard of Harvard. The fact that McGillās admission standards are pretty low (compared to American schools that rank similar) probably has a lot to do with its lack of international prestige. U of T and UBC are the only other Canadian schools that rival it for the best reputation abroad.

McGill is extremely prestigious, but us Americans are so focused on names weāve been thrown since birth like Harvard, Georgetown, etc. American students have a misconception that just because Mcgill is easier to get into, itās not as great of a school. However, if you talk to professionals in the medical field (for example), they ALL know what McGill is and most of them will be very impressed that you attend the University.

Itās been ranked 18th in the world, but I never really look at the rankings because I find them subjective.

"American students have a misconception that just because Mcgill is easier to get into, itās not as great of a school. "

Not this American. The misconception I had was that McGill was harder to get into than it apparently actually is. Because Iāve always thought of McGill as being very presitigious.

āCompared to the elite American schools, McGill canāt compare.ā

Depends on how you define āeliteā, are #s 20-35 āeliteā? Considering there are thousands of institutions of higher education. Because I think in this range accepted cross-applicants would seriously consider McGill. But thatās just my impression.

McGill is well known to those who matter AKA grad school admission counselors and companies throughout the world. If you do well at McGill, you will have no trouble getting into top grad schools and jobs. Lol this isnāt rocket science.

its interesting to hear what everyone thinks, and xxUSAxx, i know its not ārocket scienceā but its certainly a question that has no definite answer

McGill is generally considered to be the best school in Canada, and graduate schools and employers consider it to be on par with the top American universities.
