I applied for the major renewable scholarship at McGill. There is the major renewable scholarship and then the basic entrance scholarship. Both are $3,000 but the major allows first choice for res and maybe a couple more perks I'm not 100% sure. So I applied and waited and got no response. I later inquired and it turns out not only did I get rejected for the major scholarship, but the entrance scholarship as well (which, from the way the website makes it sound, is much easier to attain).

I know I sound like quite a snob right now but I have to say I'm a little annoyed. Here are some of my stats:

SAT -2190 (730 in each)
Salutatorian
GPA - weighted 4.1 or so.
7 of 8 AP classes taken

QB and captain of football team for four years
Wrestling team starter - we won the New York city championship

Acted in my school musical all four years (biggest role - Captain Von Trapp in sound of music)
National Honor Society

Active in church

Etc.

Maybe I'm way off base here but I read a couple of other posts by people who received major scholarships and I'm a bit confused. I live in Staten Island, New York. Is that a problem?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I don’t have any specific knowledge of these scholarships, but I’ve had the strong impression that the Canadian universities rely much less on extracurricular activities as they consider admission – perhaps the same is true of scholarships.

Obviously you weren’t what they wanted.

I have 30 ACT, 3.8-3.9 GPA.
I got the Entrance Scholarship, didn’t apply for major one. I was too lazy.

It sounds unfair, yes. Perhaps they liked my name better.
Or maybe it has to do with me being from a Latin American country.

I’m not so sure it has anything to do with nationality though, I know of US people getting the major ones. Maybe you simply didn’t appeal to them enough with your essay.

Nevertheless, Mcgill is still quite cheap compared to other universities and I have it more complicated when applying for a visa than a US person.

Did you apply to any schools that give you assured big scholarships for your stats? With your stats, there are schools that would have given you free tuition.

Arabrab - They say they’re looking at leadership qualities for the major scholarship so I think it’s more than just academics.

JamesJr - Yeah, I guess you’re right.

Andrewheat - Thanks for the reply. It’s interesting to see someone else’s situation. Yes, McGill is quite cheap and believe me, I am grateful. I was just curious. So what country are you from?

Mom2collegekids - I understand some colleges would offer some serious scholarships but I wanted to make sure I entered a top tier kind of school. Most of my other schools didnt offer much but most of them are totally need-based. American offered me 27,000 a year though. That was my biggest reward.

^^^

Well, where can you afford to go?

What a shame. You must be so disappointed/frustrated, especially as you seem like someone who would qualify for at least the entrance schoarlship.

I don’t know the specifics of McGill, only the general mindset of Canadian schools more generally (so I might be offbase), however some guesses:

a) they really don’t care about rank, sal or val
b) likely did not take your weighted GPA but instead your unweighted GPA (they don’t care about number of APs/rigorous courseload and may have just done their own more simplified calculation)
c) maybe looking for ‘leadership’ in a charity/world peace/liberal poltical cause kind of way, not a football/wrestling kind of way (entirely subjective, eh?)

Also did you send in any interim grades right up to the app deadline?
