McGill called me (2nd time, 1st time was a student)... but no one was home and they didn't leave a message. They called someone else and it was because they won a scholarship. I heard the packages are not to come out until late April/early May.

Son is now saying that McGill might be high on his list to apply for grad school. Any opinions on the brass program in general or the tuba studio specifically at McGill?
Thanks!

brass @ mcgill is fantastic... I'd highly recommend looking into the school for grad. the tuba/euphonium faculty seem to be attracting top talent too. a new chair of the brass program is about to be appointed, and a new high-profile faculty hire, so something to watch.

Thanks, rideltrain.
We'll check their website for updates on brass faculty.

I'd love to have son there; an excuse to visit Montreal.
I remember how beautiful the city was when we visited family there many years ago.

We finally received a fat packet of info from McGill in the mail today.

Hello all Schulich-ers:

Thanks for your insight -- my daughter, a junior in high school is thinking of applying to Schulich for a dual major in voice performance and music education. Would like to hear about experience with auditions, pre-application visits and anything that you think we might need to know. This is my first entry on college confidential . . .

KeyofH- A couple of McGill comments on threads here:

Posters mom4's son I believe is auditioning at McGill (cello). Jeremybeach auditioned as a vocal student last year, as did ABlestMom's daughter. You may want to PM them for their individual experiences.

McGill's Shulich is a top notch school. When the exchange rates were more favorable, it was a tremendous bargain after converting US dollars. It's still under the cost of alot of US programs. Other things to consider are Schulich grade or talent based scholarships and if they are offered to US applicants in the same amounts offered to Canadians. I'm not familiar if McGill treats US applicants more like Canadians, or lumps them in the international pool. Historically, at many institutions, international applicants tend to have a harder time in the admissions process.

Another point is the music ed aspect. I don't know how easy it is to convert a Canadian music ed background into teaching certification in any of the 50 states. It's something you may want to look into through your own state's Department of Education.

If music ed, rather than vocal performance is your d's primary focus and goal, you may want to consider that a music ed degree is usually more cost effective within your own state public university system than a private college.

Having said that, depending on the merit/talent scholarship package a private college may offer your d, you may end up cheaper or equal to your own state school or if performance is her goal and a more suitable private instructor can be found in a private college over your flagship u, you have another variable in the equation.

FYI, some similar discussion here, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/442759-music-education-major-trying-out-vocal-dilemma.html?highlight=music+ed and a list of music ed thread links towards the end of that thread.

We visited Schulich and my son had a lesson with the teacher he is interested in. Schulich feels bigger than the other schools he is applying to, although it may not be, but McGill is a big urban university in a great city and the kids seem mature and independent. While we all liked it a lot, I am a bit concerned that it would be easier for my son to get off track or lost in that environment--but then again, he's going to have to be independent wherever he goes. Financially, if he got no scholarships from any of the other conservatories he has applied to, McGill is far less expensive for us (our state schools don't work for his needs).
