MCGILL & US RELATIONS

i think we can all agree that all of us here on the mcgill forum know that mcgill is a prestigious and academically strong school. there is a good chance that i will probably end up here (being born in toronto and maintaining dual citizenship with the US) and was wondering if i apply to graduate schools in the US, will they recognize and acknowledge McGill's prestige?

i really think it's a valid question and it's kind of a big concern for me. i would appreciate all of your opinions =]

of course! mcgill is VERY reputable in the states and at grad schools.

Princeton's Emeritus President is a McGill grad- Harvard Med School's Dean started his career at McGill... just to name a few.

All of my friends are hearing back from grad schools now- just to name a few they've recieved acceptance to: Harvard, Yale, UMich, USC, Berkley, NYU, Duke, UNC Chapel-Hill... not to mention Oxford, London School of Economics, Cambridge, etc. McGill is most certainly recognized in the academic world!

Among my classmates, I've had two Rhodes scholars, a number of people going to grad school in Harvard, Chicago, Stanford, MIT, University of Washington (in statistics it's one of the best places), Johns Hopkins, Berkeley, NYU, Oxford (other than the Rhodes scholars), Tennessee, Texas... So yeah, you won't have a problem getting into US grad schools from McGill (depending how well you fared in your undergrad of course).

Many top academicians in the US are McGill graduates. Just check a random top American school's faculty website. They have either their PhD. or BA at McGill.

does the same go for med school?

Hmmm, I really dunno the situation for med school. But I heard that they became famous thanks to their med school. But I dunno the current situation.

For arts and sciences or social sciences, I am sure a McGill degree is one of the most respected ones for top American universities such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale, etc. In my own area, the top people in the field are either from MIT or from McGill.

I do believe it works for med school and law school as well.

What about the McGill BComm degree? Can it get me to HYPMS grad schools?

What about English degree (Faculty of Arts) at McGill??? Is it reputable?

Stop worrying people. You can get into any grad school from pretty much any university/college if you're good enough. McGill's reputation has a positive effect (the degree of which can vary), no matter what your major is, though it's better in some subjects than others, it's not a bad school in any department.

my sister went to SUNY Buffalo and had a 4.0. She went on to Columbia for grad school (journalism)
