My daughter has to make a decision and has offers from McGill (no scholarship awards, but loan offers), Case Western ($25,000 grant/scholarship/work study award and loan offers), and Suny Geneseo (loans and low tuition since we are New York State residents). Which school's biology program would likely provide her with a good chance to apply for medical school in the U.S. She likes McGill the best, but Case Western and Geneseo also seem excellent.

McGill is a very good school, probably the best academically out of those. Case Western is very good as well but focuses on engineering. Geneseo is a good option especially if she wants to attend medical school afterward because that only means more debt in the future. If she is set on medical school, then Geneseo is not a bad choice. But if there is some doubt if she will attend medical after, McGill might be the better choice since an undergraduate degree alone will look better from McGill than Geneseo.

Thank you.

I agree. McGill is absolutely the best academically, and the most prestigious, school on that list. CW is next, then Geneseo. But that’s not the only factor you need to consider. You may also want to think about the financial burden she, and you, will have after graduation. Are financial issues important to you? How much so? How much in loans will she end up with after graduation with each school? That may need to be a factor. Med school is very expensive, and you pay for it with loans. You may need to think about that.

You also need to think about fit, though. Which school does she like the best? Because she needs to do very, very well there in order to get into med school, and she’s more likely to do well at a school she likes a lot.

If you post the out-of-pocket expenses, perhaps you would get more opinions. As your name is McGilldad13 it looks like you are showing a bias. ;)
