Please help me !!
This is such a difficult decision. For pre-med, which should I pick?

McGill !!!

Hehe, =)
Do you think I’d have better chances of getting acceptance to a Med school with an undergraduate degree from Mcgill ?!
I honestly love the place, but I’m so confused.

McGill and BU would both provide you with the academic rigor that would make you competitive for medical school and prepare you for the MCAT. Posters on both the BU and McGill forums claim that both schools have “grade deflation”, which means the students feel they deserved better grades than they received. Essentially sour grapes.

McGill and BU are about the same size, both have large intro classes. McGill costs a lot less than BU, even for international students. Boston and Montreal are both fantastic college cities.

Thank you so much!
This “grade deflation” thing sounds quite scary, but I’m just going to have to fight through that.
The costs won’t affect my decision.
Thanks a lot for your help =)

It dePends if you want to go to med school in the U.S. Most people in the U.S. view americans that go to McGill as lacking the intellect to attend a selective american college.

RisingChemist=SJUHawk=Southlandguy and apparently other screen names on CC.

I’m not sure where I’ll be taking Med, but I’m not American anyways. So I don’t know how they’ll compare BU with Mcgill.

If you study hard and work smart, there’s nothing stopping you from getting good, med school worthy grades. Don’t listen to what RisingChemist says. In academia and beyond McGill is very highly regarded, even more so than BU. When I was applying to grad school, the McGill name certainly helped. Some of my close friends and acquaintances have gone on to top notch programs all over the world in business, law, medicine and other disciplines.

As far as grade deflation is concerned, the people who tend to complain about the ‘harsh’ grading at McGill are usually those that coasted by in high school and expect to do the same in university. Just because you were admitted to McGill doesn’t mean that you’re going to do well. That being said, some majors such as biochem, physics, math, econ are certainly harder than others. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t graduate with a 4.0 from these departments. If I remember correctly, during my years at McGill there were a couple Rhodes Scholars that were studying physics and math.

As Tom said there are quite a few similarities between BU and McGill. However, McGill has a far more international student body; it has the most number of international students of any North American university. Also, the McGill name carries a certain prestige that the BU brand quite doesn’t have (not saying that BU isn’t a fine institution). While Boston is a fantastic (and rather expensive) city, there is no other North American city like Montreal.

I also think that McGill’s campus is nicer than BU’s. Kenmore Square where BU is, just doesn’t compare with being in McGill’s downtown Montreal campus.

I agree whole heartedly with whittle.

RisingChemist (and the other screen names that he uses) is a ■■■■■ who makes numerous negative posts on CC re: schools he knows nothing about.
