So I've been accepted to UNC Chapel Hill as a junior transfer (economics). For those who are not aware, transfer students at UNC must complete 1 semester of general courses in order to be eligible to apply to Kenan Flagler, UNC's business school, which is my ultimate goal.

I've also applied to McGill in Canada, specifically their Arts program (I was missing a prereq for their business program). At McGill, if accepted to Arts, I would have to spend at least a year in Arts to take the prereqs I need to get into McGill's business school.

Neither school has any guarantee that students will get into their business school through internal transfers. So whichever school I go to, I am taking somewhat of a risk, and have to be prepared for the fact that I may not end up going to their business school specifically, and might have to get a degree in some other field (and then obviously later I will pursue my MBA).

Any advice for me? Which school would you pick? If you need any other information from me to give me a better answer, ask away :)

Since your questions are more about the schools than transferring, you might also want to post on the College Search & Selection forum (more traffic there) and/or the Business major forum (better informed??).

I’m in the same position (actually not really cuz I’m not planning on going into business), I just got accepted to UNC and I’m waiting on McGill. Which is best? I’m also in U Minnesota and Boston U? I have NO idea where to go but it feels as though UNC is the best school. Am I mistaken?

Thank you I’ll definitely post in those sections and see what I can find out!

Honestly, based on what I’ve read so far, it’s a close call between McGill and UNC. I’m going to ask around and I’ll message you when I find out more.

Alright, I’ll do the same. I saw McGill really well ranked on some rankings and very far behind on others however, UNC seems to stay around the 40th rank across all. BTW I’m applying to UW-Madison, what do you guys thing of UW-Madison vs UNC vs McGill?

Yeah, for worldwide rankings, UNC generally seems to be below McGill in terms of reputation. In terms of US rankings, UNC generally seems to be around 25 ish. For worldwide rankings, UNC closer to 40.

I’m not very familiar with UW-Madison. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

In all honesty, I’m quite surprised that UCLA and a few other schools are ranked higher than UNC. I know several people with 3.1-3.3 GPA’s who have transferred to UCLA. I realize that GPA is not the only factor, but it seems like it is a LOT easier to get into UCLA (both as a high school applicant, and a transfer applicant).

And honestly, I wouldn’t worry about rankings much. Employers aren’t going to be like “oh, let me check where your college ranks before I hire you”. UNC/McGill are both very well known, and that is what should count.
