McGill vs UNC

I've been accepted to UNC (in state) but not their honors program, if accepted to McGill which should I attend (considering: price, ease of getting a job in the US after, acceptance to a US grad school, quality of education)?

I very much like the idea of Montreal (and learning french, but I dont want to major in a language) but it is very far from home so transportation costs are a concern to me. However if one is a clear winner...

Which one do you like better? How much is UNC? McGill is about 30k CAD, which atm is 24k USD, but it fluctuates.

Have you visited McGill?

unc chapel hill costs
$16,370 us dollars (in state).

off mcgill's website international cost is $25,950-$33,150CAD in current exchange
$20,893-$26,690

However, I remember somebody mentioned that they help international students out somehow (work study maybe?)

I've visited UNC and its a nice big school good weather, but boring city, state, people.
I haven't visited McGill, but I like the idea of montreal, learning french, being in a real city.

You will also move off campus after your first year, which will save more money as well. I've heard many say that you can get a place to live off campus for 400 bucks a month, which is really cheap. It all depends on how well you plan it out and who/how many people you room with. Transportation shouldn't be bad either... A year ago I flew from Texas to Montreal for like 250 roundtrip. Just gotta shop for fares. You cannot work off campus if you're an international without a work permit (idk how hard they are to get) but you'd need to be pretty fluent in french I believe to get a job in the vast majority of Montreal. I do know that you can work on campus without any worries, and I'd bet they're pretty good at working with college kids and their schedules, which is what I'd be doing if I get it...

As far as the quality of education, it may not be the most commonplace name in many parts of the US, but I work in a lab at UT Southwestern and they all spoke very highly of it (those who had heard of it, most of them), as well as all the doctors I have spoken with (I will be premed) have only great things to say about it. That having been said, no it doesn't have the Harvard name recognition, but I'd say the quality of education is equivalent to UNC Chapel Hill, IMO. Anyone who deals with hiring people straight out of college should be fairly knowledgeable about McGill and its reputation.

I visited Montreal and I will say that it is the most amazing city I've been to in North America. It is extremely clean, I tell everyone that asked that I would eat my dinner off the sidewalks. I also love the fact that you can be walking down the block, and there's an extremely old but well kept up church, right next to skyscrapers. I did not find it difficult at all to get around and I speak maybe a few words of French... if that. The underground mall is also extremely cool. I just found it fascinating that they had a mall underground, and you could come out in a totally different area. There are also several distinct cultural areas in the city, which I'm certain are very very different from Chapel Hill.

What are you looking for in a school? McGill has everything I wanted. World class research, a vast array of programs, decent sports teams, yet the school wasn't focused on sports, a great social scene, and a beautiful setting. Granted that's not all, but that's what I found most intriguing about it. It's all about what you want. I would say that the 4-5 grand a year difference isn't a whole lot when it comes to choosing where you're going to spend the next four years of your life.

interesting, any arguments for unc? I guess not in the mcgill subforum.

I visited both schools in August (that was a fun month... so much driving...) and can tell you about both.

Both:
- Price
- Education
- Campus

UNC:
- More known in the US than McGill
- Good international reputation, but lower than McGill's
- Weather
- Crossregistartion with Duke
- For you, closer location (for me, not so much)

McGill:
- Better international reputation, esp. life sciences
- Less known in the US than UNC; however, better rep among those who know it
- Better city. No contest.
- Opportunity to learn French.
- Being an international student is just altogether more interesting.

I, personally, prefer McGill by far; however, take that with a grain of salt. I've lived in or near NYC for my entire life, so the idea of living outside of a large city scares me, I'm used to dealing with crap weather (just not to Montr

I would be happy to argue for UNC, except that I know nothing about it.

Funny story. I was at the Dallas Stars game the other night, wearing my McGill shirt. I was walking to my seat and some guy says "McGill, eh?" and I whipped around. Turns out his friend that was there went to McGill many years ago so I talked to her. She absolutely loved it. She said it'll kick your ass but it's such an amazing school.

I'd imagine UNC would kick your butt too though.

She had nothing but great things to say about it. She said the winters aren't as bad as you might think. They're bitterly cold, but they aren't unbearable. She actually cross country skiid to class in the winters from her house off campus. Haha. Where else could you do that...
