McGill vs. UT-Austin

Hi All,

I'm facing a decision dilemma. The May 1 deadline to choose is right around the corner but I'm still confused...

My choice is between McGill University and UT-Austin. I've now visited both schools but my choice is none the clearer. I'm on the wait list for the UT Liberal Arts Honors Program. I would study the liberal arts at either college, probably linguistics or anthropology.

Money is not really an issue. My major hesitations about UT are the size and fact that it's in Texas.. (I'm from New Orleans.) Austin does seem like a funky place to live though. I should spring for McGill, but I don't want to let snow inhibit the next four years of my life. There is also some notable administrative red tape at McGill. I'm leaning towards UT at the moment but am still completely undecided. I need to choose soon!

Any comments or tales of personal experience would be very appreciated.

Do you want to live in Canada after you graduate or US?

Ultimately the U.S.

I have heard that McGill has a great linguistics program—indeed, look at its ranking here: [World’s Best Universities in Linguistics; Top Linguistics Universities | US News](http://www.usnews.com/education/worlds-best-universities-rankings/best-universities-linguistics).

I am from the US and went to McGill for undergrad, and I didn’t find that there was so much red tape besides immigration, which is fine. I was not wild about McGill itself but Montreal is a fantastic city. McGill’s location in such an exciting city means that it doesn’t have much campus life, since you do not need to stay on campus to have fun. But honestly a big plus is that the drinking age is 18. You will be able to go out to a bar with your friends rather than binge drinking in someone’s basement! I feel like that made the vibe here more mature and fun. McGill will be great if you are willing to be independent in order to live in a very liberal and vibrant city.

How much does cold inhibit life?
