McGill vs Villanova

Hey guys,

Any insight which university is better? im planning on studying Business and or Economics. I like McGill for its global reputation as a better university in general, however Villanova's campus is much nicer, and the sense of community and school spirit there seems fantastic. But then its sort of in the suburbs of Philly, with not alot to do around i dont think (correct me if i am wrong), but in McGill the social life and party scene is great and montreal is an amazing city. Also McGill is a much more international university, whereas Villanova is not very diverse with most of the students coming from local areas on the east coast or other states in the US.

So as you can see im quite torn between the two schools, and any pros or cons or suggestions which one i should go to would be helpful! thanks!

The only thing you really like MORE about Villanova is the “much nicer” campus. But you like McGill’s international reputation, its diversity, its party scene and the “amazing” city of Montreal.

Sounds to me like McGill is the school for you. And it’s a great choice. I personally – again, this is a personal opinion – think big schools offer more opportunities, more excitement, more educational/social options. I think you grow more at big schools. My adage is: students grow OUT of small LACs, and grow INTO big universities. So I would support the choice of McGill for a student who (like you) is drawn to its cosmopolitan quality and its exciting location.

I had a friend who ended up choosing between those two schools last year and ended up at Villanova, but mostly because she wanted to stay closer to home. This is a thread that I posted for her last year:

Best of luck deciding!

@katliamom I see where you are coming from, thats what i was torn between, as i thought i would always enjoy the sense of community and school spirit that a US university offers, and im worried that a large public Canadian university like McGill has less of an aspect of this. But personally there are more pros of McGill than pros of Villanova. I was also very drawn to the Business program at Villanova, as i wasnt accepted into the management school at McGill, but i can still apparently take a joint honors in Econ and finance, or a minor in business that would fulfill my business want i guess. Thanks for the insight though! I just might be leaning towards McGill right now, just feel its good to get some more other peoples opinions.

@travelbug yeah that seems to be the case of most of the students at Villanova, they are all from around the area and as i said, there are hardly any international students. (when i went to visit i hardly saw any!) and the stats of the breakdown of international students is also low. And since i am an international student all the way from Hong Kong (a very international city), i feel that i want to keep that diversity in friends.

also thanks for the link to the thread!

I do like Villanova’s tight-knit community feel, but almost all students are Caucasians from NJ, PA, MA, NY and a few other nearby states. Villanova is even ranked within the Regional (rather than National) category by US News & World Report. If you’re looking for diversity, McGill seems like your better option, but both schools offer good educations and I’m sure you’ll find your niche wherever you end up!
