UBC and U of Toronto seem to have a better reputation than McGill, especially at the graduate/research level. Undergrad they may be equals.

i grew up in both countries (long story) and i can tell u right now, that McGill is by far the highest regarded canadian university abroad. I can also tell you that it is largely undeserved seeing how UofT, Queens, UBC, and other fine schools arent mentioned as much. I do believe, however, that UofT is recognized as superior in many fields by academics (Medical Science). All of this really has to do with grad school though. Thats why Queens is known as an undergrad powerhouse in Canada but is mostly unknown abroad....because only its biz school is top of the line on the graduate level. Overall, McGill is a solid choice of Americans...fun town, solid academics (on the same level as any top state school), and cheaper (than private/out-of-state).

If a school is a top school, it will always have haters... So in the case of McGill, it is definitely the top school of Canada. This is not something that Toronto graduates or Queens people should judge. This is something international minds will judge. Clearly, McGill has more reputation and better rankings everywhere in the world than Toronto or any other school. I am from Europe, and if people know one Canadian school, that is McGill. Torontians shouldn't be envious and attack Mcgill's reputation.

vex, i think Canadians would be best to judge their own universities not international minds who don't fully understand Canadian post secondary system. furthermore Mcgill rep overseas has much more to do with their PR dept than international minds that may or may not be in the know.

vex - i agree with ivyleaguer here. It seems you dont know very much about canadian higher learning. When it comes to grad programs, there is absolutely no competition with UofT...every program is world-class.

It's pretty clear now with all this discussion: because mcgill has been a well-established university for a long time with good connections to the ivies, even better schools will have a hard time catching up on US/international reputation, even though in Canada it is obvious that mcgill has less rep.

bneg - Yup, thats exactly the situation with McGill. International reputations take much longer to digress, and they arent good reflections of CURRENT issues.

But McGill still has a great reputation within Canada as well, but it's coupled with a certain amount of resentment for the lack of similar reputation abroad for other top quality establishments in Canada.

ivyleaguer, This is BS. I've lived (and live) in Canada as well and this is your regional Ontarian bias. Queen's and UofT are not more highly regarded, perhaps in Ontario, but that's it!

McGill, UBC and UofT are all similar in quality of faculty (overall). The difference is UofT has more of everything, it's bigger and receives more funding. However to dismiss the quality of grad programs offered in McGill is absurd. McGill has many grad programs that are easily the best in the country and the government plays a part in distributing these programs among many universities.

In terms of research Infosource often ranks them as the best in the country. They are only second in output after UofT which is a much larger university. And most peer rankings I am familiar with (for example the AMA's) rank McGill ahead of UofT and this reflects the fact that it has a great deal of respect among academics.

Your perceptions of McGill are mostly regional biases. UofT may be the research output powerhouse but UBC isn't ahead of McGill in this area and nor is Queen's. Overall, they're all very similar in quality (Queen's is arguable for grad). For grad in Canada you'd go for the top tier, that is, McGill, UofT and UBC.

Actually aca, McGill is recognized as superior in the medical sciences by the AMA, I'd say they're pretty close though.

Sorry for raising such an old topic guys, the Habs kicked Toronto's ass and so I feel like giving UofT an ass whopping as well (it's my regional bias :))

thanks for the input

bump bump

The stupidest thing I find in this thread are claims that university X (in this case UofT) is the most difficult. There are no ways to substantiate that claim and maybe it's because the students have such low entering averages, ever thought of that?

flyzeggs, that was an old post and I clearly articulated it depends on what area of the country you are in, in many respects. And let me add also program.
best,
