@turnuptuesday just so you know, the economics department offers concentrations, one of them being finance. Also, McIntire has a 70% acceptance rate, so I personally think it’s worth the risk.
McIntire should be a direct admissions process - just like Wharton (which is ranked higher BTW). There is absolutely no reason not to do this except that you risk losing some very good applicants…who wind up being econ majors instead of business majors at another school.
Why is it worth the risk?
^^^^^ It isn’t worth the risk to everyone. It’s an investment of time, money and skill. Each person who contemplates taking that risk must decide whether the “reward” upon graduation will meet their career and quality of life expectations. Like any investment, everyone who contemplates McIntire must have a backup plan.
Days on the Lawn made this decision even harder, it reminded how amazing the campus is and the convenience of being a two hour drive away. I did speak to some current McIntire students about their friends who were rejected and forced to major in Econ and they said that they largely had the same job opportunities, they just had to hustle a little harder. I’m not opposed to doing that if it came down to it, but I’ll hold off my final decisions until I visit NYU this weekend. Appreciate all the feedback everyone!
^^^^^^ A beautiful spring day on the Lawn can be intoxicating…just what the Admissions folks hope for!
… even with the scaffolding
So what did you decide? Our son is in the same boat, got into UVA, NYU Stern and Ross pre-admint, we live in VA, making the decision harder. We loved NYU but our son wants a traditional campus. UVA wins for a great instate option, but the ax hanging over your head is a bit scary.
We are letting our son decide. He is torn, bless him. Believe he has made all the right decisions so we are going to trust him to do what is right.
But to address your original post, yes if UVA guaranteed Preadmits to McIntyre, it would get a better group of students for sure.
@sonyainva I still haven’t decided, I think I have like two more days haha. But at this point unfortunately it’s come down to finances. NYU essentially screwed me over by not offering me any aid even though my family’s income is <$30,000. They said because my non custodial profile was a few weeks late, (which was completely out of my control) they could not offer me any aid and the only time I could apply for aid was freshman year so I couldn’t even reapply next year. I explained that my non custodial parent was a disabled veteran who had trouble keeping up with tasks and they pretty much said oh well. I didn’t appreciate the impersonal responses I received, given that UVA offered a very generous award while receiving the documents at the same time NYU did. While I still hate the fact that I’ll have lots of anxiety for my first two years, right now it’s looking like I’ll be attending UVA. Please let me know what your son decides!
Do they try to keep the McIntire student body 70% from In-State just like they do for the whole university?
