McIntire is fairly competitive. The McIntire website may say that like 65% (some higher number) from UVA are accepted, but the truth is that of those who apply, it is usually those with the best stats/grades, and many of those who initially intend to apply to McIntire and do not get high enough grades in the pre-req courses usually don’t apply. I would estimate that those who apply to McIntire tend to be closer to the 3.7 GPA territory.

I’m not sure how GPA plays into recruitment, but I do know the big accounting firms definitely recruit from McIntire and that there are a lot of big firms from NYC and DC that recruit in the larger college-wide job fairs. I definitely don’t consider McIntire to be “2nd or 3rd tier” though…I doubt it would earn a ranking ahead of Wharton if recruitment was an issue…

Here is some useful information:
For the class of 2012, ie admissions for Fall 2010, here are the statistics from current UVa students:

Out of 584 students who applied, 210 have been accepted, 140 deferred.
Accepted students :
Avg cum GPA = 3.7
Avg prereq GPA = 3.66

Deferred students:
Avg cum GPA: 3.4
Avg prereq GPA: 3.37

Past acceptace statistics suggest there are about 312 spots only. This means the 140 deferred candidates will have to compete for the remaining 102 seats. Remember there will be a few extraordinarily good transfer candidates also competing for these remaining 102 seats.
Another key piece of information: GPA alone is NOT the deciding factor. There are some very brainy candidates with over 3.9 who didnt make it. Clearly the admissions committee are looking for evidence of leadership and involvement in a variety of activities that showcase how the person has used his/her time. Thus, if you have enrolled as a member of 3-4 clubs, it is not sufficient to make the cut. You should have done some solid work there. Some kids seem to take the easy subjects first in order to get a high GPA, saving the tougher course work for the 4th semester. This could backfire if there are several students who take the tougher pre-requisites early. Even though their GPA may be less than yours, they could still get in and you could end up in the deferred list. So plan your activities and courses carefully. I know how important this admission is to many of you. Good luck.

In terms of McIntire grads finding jobs, the recruitment for this school is fantastic. My dad works with a bunch of UVA grads and knows a plethora who only hire other UVA grads. Even someone I interned for (an old UVA grad), showed absolute love for UVA. He has hired other UVA grads, and traveled to Charlottesville a few times while I worked there. The fantastic alumni resource UVA holds is one of the reasons many a kids desire to go to UVA (myself included).
