I just got a rejection letter from Wharton, and my second choice has always been the McIntire School Of Commerce. Is it too late to send in my application materials? I'm unclear about alot of the transfer policies.

I believe it would be too late to send in materials for this year. I am fairly certain the transfer deadline is still March 1st. Transfer decisions are usually announced on May 1st.

Secondly, although now moot, the Comm school does not technically start until 3rd year. The procedure is that students typically start in the College of Arts and Sciences, complete their pre-reqs and submit an application during 2nd year. The number of students who are accepted then start the Comm school curriculum together, as a type of super-cohort, in 3rd year. Competition is very tough though.

As a 2nd year transfer, they told us at summer orientation that if we were banking on the Comm School to have a backup, as most of us would not be admitted. If you were to apply next year, thus entering the Comm School as a 3rd year, you would be applying directly to McIntire instead of CLAS, and the recommendation from the school is to get all the necessary pre-reqs done (and with a certain degree of excellence…). Competition is still tough though, especially when you’ve just been named the #1 undergrad business school in the nation. ;)

Also, being an in-state resident helps, albeit, not as much for transfer admissions generally, but it does come with a hefty tuition discount!

wahoogrl hit it on the head. If you’re entering as a second year, you’d be entering the College of Arts and Sciences, and it is definitely too late to send in applications for the next school year.

Is it still really difficult to get in if you are already at UVA? McIntire’s website says that the offer rate for 2008 was 62%. So, I’m assuming the competition isn’t as bad if you are already enrolled.

It’s a self-select group of applicants who have to take a bunch of pre-reqs that are not necessarily easy (e.g. Stat 212). Don’t be deceived by the “high” admission rate, most people who think they’ll want to apply to the comm school don’t actually make it that far (they’re discouraged after taking a few pre-reqs).

I took Comm 201 in the spring and got a B-. How do most Comm school people do in that class? I found the class pretty difficult and I don’t know if I should give up on Comm school. I did well in Econ 201, 202 as well as Comm 180.

doubledian: I don’t think you should “give up on comm school”. It never hurts to apply if your heart is in it (unless you can achieve a higher utility using the $70 application fee elsewhere, haha.)
