McIntire Transfer. NEED ADVICE!

Hey everyone. New to the forum. Be gentle :)

Anyways, I am a sophomore at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. Transfered here after doing a year and a half at a community college in Arizona.

My GPA is 4.0, I'm involved in International Business club, have previous business experience (started a business to compete with a previous employer, but it didn't work out), and am very involved in music...especially in high school. I've also fulfilled all of their pre-requisites EXCEPT the foreign language.

What exactly does UofVA look for in transfers from out of state? I am a fantastic writer and will do well on the essays, my teachers will write great recommendation, I have the grades...so what else does it take?

I am really freaking out, I just need ANY advice I can get.

Thanks so much!

So I am assuming it is your intention to apply directly to the McIntire school for the start of your third year? (Really, for this stage of your academic career, this is your only option if you are considering McIntire.)

If so, you can expect admission to be very, very tight. McIntire only accepts a limited number of students for 3rd year admission into its program. When you say you have completed the pre-reqs (except For. Lang.) are you referring to the Arts and Sciences requirements, or those for McIntire too. McIntire has its own set of pre-reqs for business, and if you do not have these, it will significantly hinder your chances.

On the other hand, something you may want to consider (depending on your business interests) is to apply to the Arts and Sciences college and into the Economics program. It is very strong and many students who don’t go into McIntire choose this route instead. Transfer admissions from OOS into Arts and Sciences isn’t quite as competitive as I believe it is for McIntire. Keep your GPA high, detail your current activities and make sure your essays are well written and indicative of why you think UVA is the best place for you to be now.

Thanks for the great advice! I have completed the pre-req’s for the McIntire school. All except the foreign language credits (which I could complete at UofVA, I assume).

With that said, what do you think my chances are if I express significant interest and write great essays? Am I dreamin’ or is the UofVA McIntire a realistic goal for me?

Thanks so much!

It’s a reach, but not just for you…for just about anyone.

Dude, UVA students here freak out about getting accepted into McIntire.

But you just make it. The Comm School is very diverse. Everyone is very driven and very passionate about all sorts of endeavours and I know one there who’s soulless.

I just make it? As in acceptance?

Bump. Anyone have anything to add?

Re wahoogirl’s suggestion:

I’m not sure about transfer applications, but I don’t believe UVA permits you to apply to two of its schools simultaneously, as Cornell does, for instance. Applying last year as a first-year, my S had to decide whether he wanted to be considered for Arts and Sciences OR Engineering.

Therefore, if it’s important to you to get into UVA, it would be safer to go the route wahoogirl suggests. Transfer admission into McIntire is going to be VERY competitive; to Arts and Sciences, a bit less so. Also, in Arts and Sciences you would have more room for electives, in music for instance. On the other hand, if you’d prefer to attend a specialized business program elsewhere, rather than UVA’s College of Arts and Sciences, then by all means give McIntire a shot.

Thanks for the advice! Since I will be an incoming Junior, I believe that the McIntire program is right for me. I’m just insanely nervous because I have 1 shot at acceptance. I hope I can make my passion and dedication come across in my application.

Would there be any benefit to visiting campus and speaking with an advisor before submitting my application?

I don’t believe so. UVA doesn’t track interest. However, faculty/staff are usually willing to speak with prospective students if you have any questions or want to know more about the program. I doubt this will help you, but it will help you find out if the program really is a good match for you.

Yeah, I am going to see an advisor in mid October. She is going to look over my transcripts. It couldn’t hurt…so I’m just praying that it helps.

The benefit, if any, will be indirect. UVA doesn’t keep any record of who comes by to chat. But by talking to people involved in the program, you will be able to find out how they think and therefore in what ways a prospective student might appeal to them–valuable information if you know how to use it.

Just fyi: Dean J’s admission blog has a link to a new blog specifically for potential McIntire students. Might have information you can use.

Would you mind linking me that blog? I want to make sure that I’ve got the right one.

Thanks a bunch you guys, the advice is much appreciated. Wish me luck!
