I am a senior in high school who plans on majoring in business- most likely management or marketing. I'm fortunate enough to have been offered a full ride to Indiana University Bloomington/ Kelley School of Business but have also been fortunate enough to be accepted into UVA. My question is, considering it would cost me about $48,000 a year including room & board, do you find attending UVA in the hopes of getting into McIntire worth giving up the scholarship for?

That’s a lot of money even for families who can afford it. This is a very tough call. Indiana’s undergraduate business school is well thought of but UVAs is top 5. If you are from Indiana, and want to stay in the Midwest, I’d take the Kelley deal. These are two very different schools and vibes – you should be sure to visit both. If you like UVA and are looking to get out of the Midwest, UVA would be the way to go. Another thing to consider is that if you do well at Indiana, that $200,000 would pay for a great MBA.

As a midwesterner now in VA with a student UVa (though not in McIntire), this is an interesting question. Where do you want to end up and what aspect of business are you looking at?

If you are interested in I-banking, are willing to work very hard, and money is not a big concern, I would go to UVa. But, if money is an issue, AT ALL, I would take the free ride at IU/Kelly. Both schools are beautiful, but the academic “atmospheres” are COMPLETELY different – mind you I went to Purdue – but the intellectual level at IU is VERY different than at UVa (and my son seriously considered IU). Both are very fun places to attend college, but the average students at each school are very different.
