McKenna Achievement Award Finalist

hi, got this in the mail today

does anybody know much about it? or how many people are invited, only 30 get selected in the end...

I got invited as well, and I really want to attend. The selection process from this point on doesn't sound too intense -- they're GROUP interviews and even the letter says "Your chances are pretty good"

I'd love to know how many people they invited as well...

Edit: Also, does this mean we've already been (unofficialy) accepted to the college? Or could a rejection still come in April?

uhhh im not sure but consideirng theirs only 30 scholarship winners or MORE, they probably invite 45-60? iono and its a lot asking peopel to come for 2-3 days, i bet everyon who comes has a high chance, their highest scholarship is only $5000.. pretty lousy.. for a 42k school

im pretty sure if we've been selected as a finalist we should be accepted.. most schools are like this

No question of acceptance, congratulations to you all, it is quite a school!!

Good to know Arizonamom... Thanks!

Here's an interesting discussion about the CMC Achievement Award back at the old forum... http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?8/48795

Just curious--did both of you who were invited have straight A's through high school? Do you think they mostly choose regular decision applicants as a way of encouraging them to attend as opposed to ED, who they know are already coming?

Some relevant stats, since you asked:

Almost straight As throughout High School
Very tough courseload (several classes at local University)
Top 1% of class
1500+ SAT I Range
770/800/800 SAT IIs
Student Body President

... hope it helps!

wow u are amazing!!! i didn't apply by the deadline for the mckenna achievement award, but even still I don't think i would have qualified.

who did you write about in your leader essay? congratulations!

One of my best friends applied for this, but she did not get it. Do you think it will reflect poorly on her admission chances? I hope not, it's her first choice!

My S did not get the scholarship last year but was still accepted to CMC and Pomona, I wouldn't worry. Only 100 applicants get it.

I was at the weekend last year and almost everyone gets the scholarship. I wouldn't worry, just don't do something really stupid.

my quadmate got it, and I didn't.. she has okay SAT scores, but definitely not 1500 average or anything like that.. but she's a business major and she spent days on her essays.. whereas i'm a bio major and spent like an hour on my essay.. so i guess that makes sense.. haha..

does claremont offer any other merit-based scholarships? like some schools offer you money right off the bat when u get ur decision letter.. since i didnt get chosen as a finalist, i'm wondering if that would hurt my chances of getting other form of aid..

There are no other merit awards but CMC finaid is quite generous.

I'm rejected by the scholarship though...
I think CMC is giving the scholarship to those who they think have great possiblity to attend CMC. Maybe I missed something that expressed my willingness.

On the contrary, according to the adcomm I spoke with, they are trying to attract the "best and the brightest" to CMC with the McKenna award. CMC expects that only roughly 30% of those offered the scholarship will accept it (they fly 100+ kids out, offer 100+ scholarships, and expect to actually give around 30).

One CMC student told me that they offer only 1 McKenna scholarship each year to the ED applicants. As you guessed, this is because the scholarship is intended to attract top students to CMC, which is a wasted effort with respect to ED applicants.

Of course, if you'd qualify for the McKenna scholarship, you're better off not applying ED anyways (you won't need the advantage)!

raven i Private messaged you....

Hmm... you sure about that? Nothing's come in yet.

i got selected today as a finalist for the john e. allen alumni merit award!!!! ahh i'm so excited...does this mean that i'm accepted?

Uh, care to let us know what that is? :)

oh lol sorry..the letter (it was really long this is just the first paragraph) said:

We are delighted to inform you that you have been selected as a Finalist for the John E. Allen Alumni Merit Award (JEAMMA) at Claremont McKenna College (CMC). John E. Allen was an influential alumnus of CMC whose commitment to and leadership for the College was invaluable in enhancing cultural diversity on campus. To acknowledge John E. allen's dedication to CMC, the merit award was recently renamed in his honor to recognize outstanding students like you who have shown strong academic and extra-curricular performance.

Then it goes on saying it will pay or travel expenses and everything...and how to RSVP
