McKenna Achievement Award

I got a letter in the mail from CMC yesterday saying that I'd been selected as a finalist for the McKenna Achievement Award. Anyone else?

Me too! I'm pretty excited. I definitely wasn't expecting it. I knew they had awards, but I never knew there was an interview attached.

i got that letter too. that free trip to southern california in the middle of winter has to be the best part. although the money would be nice too.

I got one too! It's pretty exciting. Particularly since I haven't gotten any good news at all so far concerning any of my applications.

I think one of the best parts is that pretty much everyone who received one can consider it a likely letter for acceptance =]

Anyone have any idea how many people are being flown in for interviews? The letter says that more than twenty people may receive scholarships, but how many finalists are there?

Also, anyone get a letter for a Seaver Leadership scholarship?

got one, too!

good luck to everyone in the interviews.

I am so excited! I also want to know how many finalists there are. The letter says that since there are 20 scholarships the chances of receiving the scholarship are pretty good. And I don't think they would pay to fly out like 100 students.

Wd90, did you get a letter about the Seaver Leadership scholarship?
Also do you guys know if we stay will students at any point during the weekend?

No, I don't think I had enough leadership positions to be considered for a Seaver scholarship.

I found this thread from '05 on the same topic: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/claremont-mckenna-college/31933-mckenna-achievement-award-finalist.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/claremont-mckenna-college/31933-mckenna-achievement-award-finalist.html</a>.</p>

Someone said in that topic that they fly out 100+ students to campus, and that 100+ students are offered scholarships. So everyone can pretty much be assured that they will be offered one, as long as you don't do anything horrible over the interview weekend. Just remember that these scholarships are CMC's way of trying to get the best applicants, so be proud that you've been chosen as a finalist, and know that you probably have one great college that you will be able to attend. :)

Thanks a lot! The link was helpful, hopefully I don't screw my interview up or anything like that. lol

I got the award too! Woot!! I'll totally be seeing y'all there during the weekend! I'm really excited about seeing the classes, lol!

Got the letter today; finalist for both awards :-)

Yeah, I'm also curious about the number of finalists. And I'm pretty sure "100+" thing isn't exactly spot-on, if they really do only award 4 Seaver scholarships and 20 Achievement scholarships.

It will definitely be an interesting weekend. I'm also going to check out Stanford while I'm in the area. The only thing that makes me sad is that I'm missing the only regional debate I was going to be able to attend this year :(

For a Seaver as well? Impressive :]

20 or so people actually receive scholarships. Many more people are offered scholarships.

I filled out my travel form today. Looking forward to seeing you all on March 8th!

Does anyone know where the class schedules are to plan for visiting classes on Monday?

EDIT: Never mind, I found it lol. It's here <a href="http://www.claremontmckenna.edu/admission/visit/interviews.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.claremontmckenna.edu/admission/visit/interviews.php</a> if anyone else is looking for it.

congrats to everyone who got it, unfortunately i didn't BUT for those of you who were asking about numbers the letter i got said that they selected 95 finalists for the seaver/mckenna scholarship out of 1,239

Did you receive a letter indicating that you were not a finalist? I applied for the scholarship but never received any further communication....

I got one. I'm pretty amped.

I got my plane ticket confirmation today, Seattle to Ontario. Anybody else get their itineraries?

That's too bad that you didn't get one ije28 =/ What was the letter you got, though? Was it some kind of runner-up letter or something?

I haven't confirmed my itinerary yet because I want to know how many classes I can go see... What time are you leaving on Monday, wd90?

My flight on Monday leaves at 4:19, so I have plenty of time to go see classes.

I'm a little confused; can someone help me out on this?

My dad seems to think that this is a big college visit weekend, and people will bring parents, etc. I have the impression that it's just for scholarship finalists, and since we're staying on campus and all, they don't expect us to bring our parents.

So, to clarify:
1) Are you folks (from outside of the region) going alone or with parent/s?
2) If so, are we assuming they'll arrange transport between the airport and the college as well?
3) Do you have any idea what the schedule looks like? And if there's downtime + no classes (weekend!), are we expected to just hang around?
I ask the last two because I can't exactly rent a car for several more years now... :-p

1) Nope. Just me. I doubt parents are included because there is absolutely no mention of them in the letter (as well as in the website). Besides, we are staying in dorms, and I doubt they would be invited into the dorms.

2) I'm sure there is transportation for us, and I doubt there will be any provided for parents that tag along.

3) It says on the website to bring homework, since there will be downtime. However, I wouldn't plan to write your term paper over the weekend; after all, you are on a prospective college's campus, why not go out and explore? :)
