McNair Letters are out!!

Daughter got her letter for McNair today!! Columbia here we come.

Congrats, by the way, what were your daughter's stats? Might be helpful to see if any of us other oos students have a shot at McNair.

stuck, Thanks. D stats 1550/2340 sat, 3.3 GPA (our concern), Top high school- 7 AP's completed, 5 more in process. National merit semifinalist but did not make finalist, good ec including 4 years varsity tennis. Mom says she had awesome honors app- I honestly didn't see it!

Proudpop
COGRATS to D and you!!
My S is a current McNAir and volunteers at the Interview weekend. He and a female McNair friend in the past have gotten together with interviewees who have posted here for a private tour, chat, etc. Let me know if you need any more info or would like the extra attention!!
PS they treat u very well at the interview weekend
D will get lots of advanced standing credit for the AP's at USC.S had 9 Ap's all together and got credits from them all.

Congrats!

Did your daughter's letter mention a date for Scholars Day? It would be nice to start planning.

Any insights as to why your daughter wasn't named a NMF? I thought that NMF was dependent on validating the PSAT score with a comparable SAT score (and completing the paperwork).

I got my letter yesterday! Wa-hoo! Vanderbilt is my first choice, but USC is sure sweetening the deal.

My stats:
SAT 2290/1490
ACT 33
GPA 3.96 UW
Boarding school for the arts (Interlochen!)
A zillion and a half ECs, all honors classes fresh/soph years
NMSF, not finalist
Accepted to honors college with $22,500 scholarship

I'm excited to fly down there! Side note: how's the country music scene in Columbia? That's a main reason I want Vandy; I want to pursue a solo career in country music, and obviously Nashville is great for that. Pretty much my only hangup about going anywhere else.

cathymee,

Thanks for the offer. We may take him up on that. In a past life, we lived in Columbia and good friend works for the Dean of the Moore school so will probably go in early to visit him. But special tours by students are always much more uselful!!

tactics:

Dates for visit are Feb 28-Mar2.

Not NMF--too many "C's". At least that is what they alluded to in the form letter.

PP

macaroni:

Congrads!!

We lived in Columbia for about 10 years and it has a pretty strong music scene near campus in Five Points area. Countrty is very big..that said it is nothing like Nashville!!

PP

PP: Thanks! I'm super excited to see the place.

Tell me about Columbia! As I said, I'm heavily into country music. Do you think someone could reasonably start a solo career there? Also, I'd love to hear about the city in general. I'm Jewish; how will that affect me? Is the place safe? I'm super full of questions and I know they'll come up bit by bit. :)

proudpop
well if you lived there for 10 yrs and have connections to the Dean you are "in the know" already. But if D wants a student-aspect tour or insights into the program just let us know.
tactics..
be aware that the McNair Interview weekend will be different dates than other scholars Day time..I believe that is later on in the spring. The other scholarships don't involve interviews...only the McNair and Carolina.

macaroni
I'm sending you a Private Message about USC vs Vandy, being Jewish there, the city itself and the country scene.Check back later for it.Are you thinking about a Music Major?

Thanks, cathymee! I appreciate that. I intend to major in music (I'm a violinist currently at Interlochen; do you know the school?). I want to be able to spend part of my time in college and a good bit of time gigging/composing/performing so as to make a name for myself.

Proud Mom cause s got McNair Letter. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

another congrats out to you and your son!!
any q? ask away!!

Would like to hear more about being Jewish at USC...if there's info. that can be "publicly" shared...

does anyone know if the scholarship requirement of 3.8 for the OOS leiber and mckissick is for W or UW GPA.

i think D will have the test scores, but her W GPA is NOT 3.8.

2boysima:
If you live in an area with a large Jewish population and come to USC, it may be a culture shock. If you were raised in SC (or almost anywhere in the South), you probably find yourself "a novelty" but you will be used to that! I'm not all that familiar with USC other than then knowing many Jewish students from South Carolina who have/are attending.

College of Charleston probably has the largest concentration of Jewish students in SC. They have a Jewish Studies program, a very active Hillel, a Jewish fraternity, sorority, etc. plus a new building. A friend's S graduated two years ago and is now in Rabbinical school.

PM me if you would like additional information.

I'm also curious about Jewish life. I've grown up in Montana, so there are next to no Jews at all, but I would like to be able to date/marry Jewish (as ridiculously shallow as this sounds). Is that possible in Columbia? Are most Jews on the USC campus Reform? Conservative? I can't imagine they'd be Orthodox, given that there's no kosher kitchen. I know that there's an Orthodox shul in town with a mikvah, but other than that... I don't really know where to begin.

Most importantly, are Jews welcome in South Carolina? I realize that the South is predominantly Christian and this doesn't bother me at all, but I would like a place where I feel like I can fit in.

How far from USC to CofC?

Sorry for getting so far off the McNair topic! Still super excited to get there. Anyone else who gets their letter, please PM me, since I'm definitely going!

"cathymee" Do you know when departmental scholarships are announced such as those in chemical engineering? And, I guess they stack on McNair? As my son tends to be socially conservative, any assistance or links you can provide for him to meet and greet at USC are greatly appreciated. BTW, we are really looking forward to McNair visit at USC and though we toured campus in July of 2008, there were still things we missed due to compressed time schedule.
