McNair Scholarship

Did anyone get an email inviting them to a dinner in their area discussing a possible McNair Scholarship? Just curious about how hard it is to get one of these scholarships.

My daughter got a phone call about this time last year inviting her to dinner when USC was not really on her “list”. To make a long story short, she is now a McNair and LOVES being at South Carolina! The way she has been trated and the opportunities offered are in her mind (and mine as well) second to none.

It is very competetive and the application is very rigorous but ,in my opinion, USC accepts a very diverse group- of course academics are very important but they have a number of McNairs that excel in other areas- sports, community service, ec’s, etc.

Best of Luck.

Its competitive but so worthwhile
S is now a Senior at USC,a McNair from New York
Lovely thing abt USC is they allow you to "stack " scholarships so you can get a McNair PLUS other scholarships .
Attend the dinner if possible and hear what opportunities a McNair can have there.Come back and ask more q’s of us!!

I got the invitation as well am plan to attend. I have applied to SC and did visit the campus and really liked it. I am curious about the requirements for McNair. For instance any idea about SAT and GPA ranges?

theres info on the Honors College pages of the USC website sc.edu about the stats of the Honors college students but I’ve never seen a breakdown of the McNairs themselves. I suspect it would be on the higher end of the Honors stats. But they also look for other traits/accomplishments.They admire well roundedness and expect their chosen students to be the future leaders of the campus, whatever their area of interest/major (in other words, not necessarily a student government leader, but if a science oriented student, a leader in that area.

My daughter is interested, but we are wondering how one might get “invited” to one of the dinners. We are in Ohio…does anyone know what areas they are in?

easmesmom
you might want to call the admissions office and ask for the admissions person who is handling McNair applicants to see if there is a dinner in your area. S did not attend a dinner here in NY in the year he was applying but he did meet up with an admissions counselor who was travelling the area (not specifically an Honors/McNair counselor)to get more info and gauge his chances.
You of course, are free to apply w/o attending a dinner!

thanks, cathymee…my D called and talked with someone in their office. No dinner in our area of Ohio, but he was kind and encouraging. Her applications are in and complete, and of course, I think she’s a perfect candidate! I guess they let you know the end of January. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

come back and ask any questions you might have along the way!
best of luck to your D doing the app is the hardest part LOL

My son was chosen as one of the McNair scholars this year but turned down the scholarship to go to U VA. It broke our hearts to lose the free education especially after everyone at USC made us feel so welcome at the McNair weekend in March. He’s in the right school for him, but we are certain that USC would have been a wonderful choice too. I’ll bet we met the girl whose dad wrote that she is so happy there and wish her well.

I was invited to the dinner earlier this year and ended up going, even though USC wasn’t high on my list. After the dinner, I was really excited about the Honors College / McNair Scholarship so now USC is tied for my top college choice - provided that I get into the Honors College. McNair would be awesome!

What is the timetable for hearing back about SC scholarships (McNair and otherwise)

McNair and Carolina finalist announcements usually go out at the very end of January/first of February. General scholarships are typically announced in March

Wanted to revive this thread. My son had a dinner in NY in October to learn about McNair. Turned out we were the only ones for dinner! Any other hopefuls out there? My son’s stats are 4.3 weighted GPA, 2320 SAT, Honors Society, National Merit Commended student, cross country, track and field, teaches at church, yearly mission trip…we live in CT.

USC wasn’t on his radar either until we got the dinner invite, he’s very interested and we are hoping for a fedex package in a few weeks.

Any winners from last year that can share their experience and stats?

My DS is hoping for McNair. USC not on his radar either until he got a letter saying he looked good for the scholarship and explaining it. He’s been accepted to the honors college, so now we wait.

Didn’t see the dinner invite, but he had so many emails/letters coming in we could have easily missed it if it was there.

ACT 34/SAT 2250
GPA 4.4 w
Top 4% of school

Guess we’ll find out in the next month or so.

I think we should hear at the end of this month. How long did it take your son to fill out the application? My son took about two weeks, he really was thoughtful and I was really impressed and touched by his essays, 8 in total I think. At least it gave him an arsenal of essays for the rest of the apps he has been doing!

We had a wonderful steak dinner this past fall and listened to a presentation from 2 impressive spokespeople from the University. GPA 4.4 ACT 32. Accepted to Honors, waiting for McNair.

How many people attended your dinner? I felt like the Northerners may have snubbed them and that’s why we were the only ones…

We received the FedEx package this morning. Our son happened to be home because his school had a two-hour delay in start time. We are very, very excited!

Are you instate or out of state? Congratulations to your son!!!
