I got into McNutt - Crone and the Kelley LLC. I don't want to be in a dorm that parties too much but at the same time I want to be in a moderately social dorm. Can some IU upperclassmen or graduates tell me what I need to know about this dorm?

My son was in McNutt dorm–Bryan Hall three years ago. A real party group back at that time.

My understanding is that the Kelley LLC students were put in the McNutt dorm to “mellow” it out a bit and tone down its “party” image.

You’ll get all types in these dorms;–those who want to associate with everyone and those who want to be alone, those who study hard and those who want to just blast the stereo, those who are clean and tidy and those who just junk and trash everything, and those who are in bed early, and those who come back to the dorm at 3 AM on a school night.

Despite, all of this activity (which is just a reflection of all the energy young people have), more than 85% of you will still be at the school and doing well at the end of the year. About 15% will drop out–some because the rowdiness catches up, or because they didn’t really want to go to college anyway, and some (sadly) because of financial reasons, and some because they feel homesick or lonely at the school (this usually happens the first semester)–which is actually why colleges try to get the students to live together and be supportive–and also encourage you to participate in clubs and sports activities right from when you first get to the school.

Personally, I doubt there is a gigantic difference between dorms at IU-B. The comments above probably apply to most of them.

Hopefully, you will learn to live well with others–and to form friendships–and will enjoy your new independence.

I am an RA in McNutt and I can tell you that McNutt is indeed a very social dorm, even compared to others on campus. It does sometimes get a bit loud, but if you are trying to study or sleep, please inform your RA or the Center Desk because McNutt has a policy of 24-hour courtesy for such an instance. It is good to note, however, that sometimes the best thing you can do to study is to get out of the dorm and study elsewhere because you can often focus much better. The main library is only a couple minutes walk away and we have study areas in the Center Building that are very helpful.

Jeffrey562, have you joined the Kelley LLC website on ning.com that the advisory board for the dorm put together? My daughter is in Crone too and has found it helpful to start getting to know her dorm-mates online.
