<p>I have heard that it is tough to get good research opportunities as a freshman (by good i mean a research internship where you are actually contributing not just a gofer). However, if you do well and the professors see you seperating yourself, you can get a good opportunity sophomore year. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!! (fellow CMU applicant)</p>
