Mctyeire Hall is where I'm dorming at. FML! It's not fair; I submitted the FYE survey and I put a lot of effort in writing the essay. Sigh...I'm not looking forward to my freshman year as much now...

Why did Emory even build the new freshman dorms? To make the freshman who aren't housing in the new dorms extremely envious? How can you build HUGE new dorms and not have space for the freshmen who did the survey?

Because doing the survey doesn’t guarantee housing there and there aren’t enough new dorms to house all freshmen filling out the survey (seriously, I’m betting everyone wanted a new dorm and just filled out the survey). McTyeire’s rooms are probably larger than the newer frosh dorms. Not to mention, I actually do believe it is coming down after you frosh year as Holmes hall (the new one being built now) should be able to replace it. Would you have rather had a housing situation like Vandy where they simply wait until all the new dorms are built to open them up? Do you know how long that what take as slow as they’re going w/it here? Plus Emory’s freshman enrollment has grown (and will perhaps grow more), so, in such a case, some would not get housing or would have housing much worse than McTyeire (seriously, other dorms prior to me going there were apparently much worse than that. Some of my senior friends lived in them).

If the highlight of your freshman year will merely be living in a 4-5 star like hotel w/lacking community, then you chose to go to a top 20 for the wrong reason (you should have chosen a nice public school’s honors program where you could be treated differently from your peers and be spoonfed opportunities that others on campus are not. If you are serious, I suggest you prepare your transfer app.) . And besides, most other top 20s have much worse housing all around (no matter the class, while housing may have nice architecture, the actual accommodations suck), and you don’t hear freshmen there saying: “Sense my dorm isn’t shiny and new, I’m no longer looking forward to being here” (this is a problem w/Emory, students to prone to complaint for trivial reasons). If you are a serious student, there will be many other things to look forward to, trust me. My friends actually seemed to end up liking McTyeire (I know one rising junior and a rising sophomore who lived there). It seemed more fun and active than Fevans or Longstreet (and definitely Turman) which probably explains why they still won Dooley’s Bowl despite the new dorms being host of “living learning initiatives.” All the old dorms are much more interesting socially than the new ones if you ask me (and from my experience. I lived in Complex when it was for frosh. It and Harris were quite awesome together). Note there is such thing as making friends and thus being able to know someone living in one of the “prized” dorms (Fevans is also partially open for most of the day, the awesome downstairs amenities are accessible) so you can have the benefit of hanging out there and using the facilities while going home to a larger room. On top of that, a reshall is made of people. The people you meet will more than often make up for lackluster accommodations (imagine the student in Fevans w/a sucky roommate, but you having an awesome roommate. Needless to say the one in Fevans will never like it no matter how shiny it is). Cheer up and get excited for college.

You can’t start living there until sophomore year, where your options will be reasonable anyway (C-mont tower, Complex, Woodruff, and yes, culture houses and frats). If the person is so desperate, they could hope for Emory being slightly underenrolled and ask for a room change request via the housing website. No guarantees though, and they have to provide a reason. “I want a 4 star hotel” won’t cut it.

Harris=fun (plus they get a higher percentage of amenities than normal). The only thing that sucks are their dim hallways. And I guess elevators are a bit infrequent for its size too. It’s a hall with decent sized rooms (though not as large as McTrimble) and a more vibrant social life.

can you describe the bathroom and shower place? im having a really hard time trying to picture it and i cant see how it works. where do you put your towels and shower stuff? if the the shower place is at same room as toilet place when woulnt the floors always be wet?

Feel envious, but don’t let the accommodations be the highlight of the freshmen experience. There is much more fun to be had and things to be accomplished outside of dorm life. By the end of frosh year, if you took advantage of opportunities and events afforded to you, you should not envy anyone because of something like that.

Can I just say that I lived in McTyeire in 2005-06 (back when it was the best freshman dorm on campus - mostly because they hadn’t even begun construction on the new ones). You will seriously love that building. The rooms are just massive. It’s not brand new like most of the other dorms, but the location is unbeatable. You’re right next to the DUC, and it’s such a small building, which helps to develop a great sense of community.

This is something that Emory as an institution just doesn’t understand, but these old buildings have character and history that the new ones just don’t. I would trade places with you, OP, in a heartbeat. While I have to get on the subway and go to work, you get to start what’s going to be the best 4 years of your life in a month or so.
