Hey guys,

I'm currently a freshman in the Wayne State MedStart Program (non-binding BS/MD) and I wanted to know a bit more about how to approach applying to a MD/MBA joint degree programs in graduate school. I have been doing some research into MD/MBA careers, and they seem very interesting and something I am more geared towards rather than a career in clinical or hard research related medicine. However, I do not know much about what is required for business school admissions.

During my research in graduate schools that offer MD/MBA programs, I noticed that most universities require acceptance into both their medical schools and business schools. Since most of my knowledge about grad schools is medically related (ie. credentials and the processes to get into medical school), I am unsure as to how to approach an undergraduate experience that would prepare me for admissions into a top business school. When do students take the GMAT? Do b-schools (business schools) care about undergraduate major or whether or not your extracurriculars are biomedically related? Do b-schools give preference to business internships over other internships (ie. science research internships, econ. research internships). In general, I am not too knowledgeable about the business admissions side of an MD/MBA, and I would like to know alot more from people who have the experience or knowledge

Hmm it’s interesting that you said you don’t want a career in clinical medicine or in medical research. Are you still following through with your pre-med requirements or are you completely changing to business?

You still have a lot of time to decide. Do some more research and get experience with both fields. If you want to combine these two fields you can get into hospital administration.

If you’re still interested in B-school then know that the main factors for B-school is GMAT and work experience.

I am still very interested in medicine, and I am on the track to med school due to my MedStart scholarship. I still want to go to med school but I looked at career opportunities with an MD/MBA, specifically pharmaceutical management, and I think a career like that would be more fitting for my aspirations. So I do still want to go to med school and I am following through with my pre-med requirements, but I also want to gain credentials and experience that will help me be a competitive applicant to b-school in the future as well.

I was wondering what kind of work experience b-schools look at? For example, if I worked as a paid research assistant at a stem cell research and development firm, would that be a legitimate work experience for b-schools? I know it may be an obvious question, but I do not know too much about b-schools and want to know more. I know that med schools dont really discriminate against certain work experiences and extracurricular experiences, whether science related or not, so I was curious if b-schools see it the same way
