Hey,

I know that 99.9% of the topics are about undergrad/MD, but I'm curious about an MD/MBA program. I have ambitions to be a doctor or own a hospital or start a series of clinics (I already started on the business plan :P).

Would this be a good path? Does anyone have information on this?

A lot of medical schools have partnerships with another graduate school whereby you can take a year off to obtain an MBA and then return to medical school. For example when I visited, both Jefferson and Miami med schools offered such arrangements, just look in to the specific medical schools a little more. It sounds like a decent path if you don’t mind adding an extra year.

Union/AMC offers an 8-year program where you graduate with a bachelors, an MBA, and an MD.

I think that doing an MBA along with an MD is a wast of time. Finish you medical training and get some real world working experience. If you want to be entrepreneurial, you can learn most of what you need by reading a few books. If you still think you need to get a piece of paper that says MBA, you can always get an executive MBA while you are in practice.

^I don’t think an MD/MBA is a waste of time and an MBA can pay dividends through expanded roles in public health policy, management roles (using your knowledge of finance, organizational behavior etc in a health care setting), entrepreneurship (see: Dr. Frederic Moll, founder of Intuitive surgical), etc.

IMO, given both the huge shift in emphasis on quality measurement and cost control, there will be a tremendous number of opportunities and challenges for physicians with an acute appreciation for the business side of medicine to take on in the coming decades. And a hard-hitting MBA from a top 30 B-school with the experience, networking, and knowledge it provides can’t be replaced.

That being said, MD/MBA is hardly for everyone and even for people excited by the idea, it is relatively new concept and you will be hard pressed to find a lot of well defined roles that uniquely take advantage of your MD/MBA

Thanks everyone for the input! I’m a couple years off before I genuinely have to worry about it, but I just wanted some input!

If you do want to go the MBA route, I think you will get more out of the MBA experience if you have some real world experience before going to business school. Many of the top executive MBA programs like to take MDs because they add to the diversity of the class. Getting your MBA simultaneously along with your MD might limit your business school options.

Have you looked at the Union College/Albany Medical College Leadership in Medicine Program? BS/MBA/MD program
