MD/MBA programs?

Hi,

I was just wondering at what your thoughts are on MD/MBA programs. I many schools are starting to adopt this dual degree system. Also, if you could comment on the difficulty associated with getting into these programs, that would be much appreciated.

I only know of Union College that has an MBA/MD program. I'm not aware of any other ones. But I think that if you really want to practice medicine, an MBA would be helpful because you already have some education in business, and although it may sound cynical, medicine is a business.

Baylor college of medicine also has one

TONS of schools have them. These include: UMich, Northwestern, UPenn, Emory, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, UChicago, Yale, Dartmouth, Harvard, and many other lesser known schools as well. Most programs state that you have to apply to both the Business and Medical Schools separately and you need to take the MCAT and GMAT. However, they also state that most applicants apply after their first or second year of medical school (you could also apply after first year of B-school). They are obviously very difficult to get into. I'm not sure how difficult or anything like that because I'm only a high school senior. If you want to know more about it I suggest googling MD/MBA or looking on specific med school websites.

I wonder if Dr. Sedrish might have thoughts on how valuable such a program may be for someone who intends to own their own practice. Would such knowledge be useful, or overkill? Would the knowledge and skills that you gain by having the MBA enable you to make so much more money that it would offset the cost of the extra year of school? By how much?

(Obviously I'm not expecting Dr. Sedrish to come on here and give me figures to prove that MD/MBA programs are worthwhile or not. That would be impressive though.)
