MD/PHD and DO/PHD question?

Hello, I will be attending college this fall (as a freshman)...I've always noticed how some doctors had MD or DO while others had MD/PHD or DO/PHD..So I began to investigate and found out about what a physician scientist does and It's something I would really want to enjoy (I know I'm getting ahead of myself but it's something that interesting)...My life time goal is to become a Neurosurgeon and would love to do some research...With Neurosurgery I'm also interested in learning/doing research about nanotechnology and its application to cancer and/or stem cell research in its application to regenerative tissue/cells (I want to get a PHD in Biomedical Engineering)...So saying this I have a question actually a series of questions...Although I know this may seem insane I will let my goals and struggles dictate where I want to go...

What are your opinions on what I want to do? Advice, Criticism, etc...
Would a PHD in Biomedical Engineering work along with neurosurgery? If not, what other field would I work?
What are your experiences under the MD/PHD or DO/PHD program? Where did you go, your interests, etc...
If your a Neurosurgeon, OrthopedicSurgeon, CardioSurgeon, Pecdiatrician, etc... what are you currently researching now along with your career field?

Feel free to answer all, some, give me opinions, advice, etc... Any information will be gratefully appreciated! Thank You!

You’re probably not going to find many actual MD/PhDs here.

I can tell you that some medical schools offer a MD/PhD program. Here’s a list of those that do:

You might get more responses to your question if you re-post it in the Parents Forum. Someone there surely knows a working MD/PhD or DO/Phd and can help you find more about your options.
