me and appliances again........

On UM's website it says: "Students are allowed to use popcorn poppers, microwaves, coffee pots, and hot pots if they have encased heating units."

Does the encased heating unit apply to microwaves... is a microwave already in an incased heating unit.. or does that phrase only apply to the hot pots?

I know I analyze way too much! Just wondering if microwaves have to be put in something else.... and if so what?

You are stressing too much! I would suggest looking at the housing website and finding the link that shows what the on-campus vendors offer. Then you can see the specific wattages, etc. and make up your mind if you want to go with your own choice from an area store, or use the vendor at school. Here's the link:

We are probably going to buy a microwave and refrigerator from a local store like Sears..
Good Luck!

You can have anything that does not have an open flame or open burner. You could even have an electric skillet for that matter. No open flame is the key here. Something like a "fifth burner" or a hot plate would be a no-no, because it has an open heating element.

Microwaves are handy but not a necessity. Son says he didn't use his much, until summer session when the dining halls are closed. Same with coffee pot.

oh ok, after reading the phrase again right before posting.. I started to think that's probably what it meant... I just have a lot of food allergies so I don't want to be completely limited to the dining hall even though I have a meal plan. It will probably be used as a back up plan anyways.

Lofting beds
I know this was discussed in many posts but, I can not seem to find this now,so if someone can tell me the best way to go about lofting a bed. I think i remember someone posting that upperclassman come around during move in times and offer services to build the lofts. then i recall someone saying you can buy lofting blocks at BB&B or home depot. Anyone know the best and cheapest way to loft a bed and is the size of the bed twin extra long? thanks.

I (and my S's roommate's family) ordered ours from here and are having them shipped in: http://www.collegebedlofts.com/

The beds are twin x-long. You can also check out lofting from some UM architecture students here. http://miamiloftco.com/
