me, barnard=soulmates?

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas about what college would be a good match for me. I have only just began to seriously consider schools and Barnard really appeals to me although I am not sure if it is a realistic option with admissions being so competitive.

Here I am on paper -

Junior Year, Female

Upper-class Jewish family from New York suburbs.
Small, competitive public high school.

GPA - 96.8 Unweighted, 99ish weighted

APs taken so far (I plan on taking 5 next year) -

World History (4)
English Comp
American History
Biology

PSATs - 201 (without prep), I am certain I will get each section up to a 700 at least for the real thing now that I've been studying.

I have been awarded the academic achievement awards of Spanish, Math, and Music over the past 2 years for my high school.

I take voice lessons with a well-known opera singer and am receiving a formal classical music education. I have participated in all the honors choirs offered to high school students in my district, including All-State. I also have been president of my school's choir for 3 years and a member of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Chamber Choir for 3 years as well. I attended Carnegie Mellon's Pre-College Music program where I studied under Stephen Totter and performed Mozart's Coronation Mass as the soprano Gloria soloist. Simply put, music is my passion and I fully intend to continue studying. I was also contemplating submitting a full-length recorded CD with my application as a suppliment with selections from Mozart, Faure, and Hayden. I have learned the IPA and can sing in French, Italian, Spanish, and German (and, duh, English). I have sung at various benefits and charity events including the "Ride for Life" fundraiser and Hospice memorial ceremonies.

Theater Resume -

Les Mis - The Factory Girl

Junior:
The Crucible - Abigail Williams
The Sound of Music - Maria

My freshmen year I was class president as well as president of my Jewish youth group.

I am planning a trip with my father for the summer to Chiapas, Mexico to help him provide medical care by working as a translator (he is a surgen) to the impoverished people there.

Do you have any tips or suggestions for things to do to improve my chances? I love Barnard because they have a joint program with Juliard for classical musicians who want both degrees.........I just have to make the academic cut for the college! Any other suggestions on where to apply would be greatly appreciated.

Like most Ivy and near Ivy level schools, Barnard is first and foremost about academics. As you said, you have to make the academic cut which means you should be in at least the top 10% of your class, and score at least 1370 on your SAT CR+M. That's the 50th percentile for Barnard. Better, be in the top 5% of your class and score above 1370 on your SAT CR+M...and the higher you score above 1370 the better. Also, aim for 2100 or better for a total score.

As for other schools, here is a link to a discussion of schools noted for music majors in the CC Music Major discussion group:

Lots of good suggestions there.
