My son is currently a freshman at Cal Poly SLO in Bioresource/Ag engineering. He will be specializing in power/machinery. In his current major BRAE, he can take ME classes if he meets the prereqs for the class. BRAE and ME at Cal Poly share almost the same support (including static/dynamic/CE and EE courses) and some major courses (though in BRAE they are called hydraulics instead of fluids, computer controls instead of mechantronics, equipment eng. instead of intro/intermed. design).

Question is...Can he be considered for jobs in ME if his degree is not in ME, but say he explains he has taken ME courses (he plans on taking upper div courses in ME like fluids 2, dynamic 2, thermo 2, heat transfer, vibration)? And maybe has ECs in ME.

He's beginning to want to try to switch over to ME or even to general engineering. But with Cal Poly being difficult to change to ME from a major outside of the engineering school, and the possibility of putting him behind in graduating in 4 years. Would it be better to just take extra ME classes or really try to change majors?
