ME degree to work as a petroleum engineer from a Cal State?

I am thinking about studying mechanical engineering and getting a job in the oil/gas industry. I want to work as a PetE but if the job market does dry up as some are saying a MechE degree can land me work somewhere else, so a MechE is more pragmatic. Anyway my question is is getting a MechE degree from a cal state a viable option in this field? Or would I just be better off 1) trying for a more prestigious/private school or 2)studying something else. P.S ignore my dumb name, I didn't think I'd ever use this account again.

Go to the careers sections of web sites of oil and gas industry companies and look to see what kinds of engineers they hire for what kinds of jobs.
