ME or MC

i'm asking which dorm is better, middle earth or mesa court, taking in consideration of...

generally which one has a happier atmosphere, which one gloomier n which has more windows

easier to socialize

cleaner

louder/quieter

I never visited Middle Earth (probably going to dorm there though), but I've been to Mesa Court quite a few times and it's pretty clean and cheerful. The only problem is that it's so far away from Engineering...

When I was applying for dorms EVERYONE i talked to told me Mesa Court. That was the truth.

Got my housing contract today. Blah, my friend wants to dorm at MC and I want to dorm at ME, but only because ME is closer to classes... though I'll have a car so that shouldn't make much of a difference...

Is anything about ME actually better than MC other than the proximity to classes? Like... facilities, social life, etc?

The parking situation is a lot better at Mesa.

coolman, believe me, you wont be driving your car to any classes if you are living on campus, there is no point, unless you want many hours of frustration in looking for parking. Look at the good side of MC, its 2 steps from the Bren and Anteater ballpark when you wanna go to basketball/baseball games. Plus it's on the very outer edge of campus, kinda feels like you have more freedom, seperated from ring road and all the buildings.

You can't really determine which hall will be closer to your classes, since you're a freshman and will be taking a lot of breadth classes that will be all over the place. And just because you're taking a class in a certain subject doesn't necessarily mean that the class will be held there. For example, when I was a freshman, I had a Humanities Core class in the Computer Science building. I had a Biochemistry course in my sophomore year at the Social Science Lecture Hall. So regardless of where you live, you'll be doing some walking. But once you find your way around, you'll see that you can get anywhere on campus within a few minutes if you know the shortcuts.

say i don't care about parking at all (cuz i'll be riding a bike), and i don't care about the proximity of the dorm, which is better?

in my opinion and many many others- Mesa Court. Hopefully you get in the older part of mesa court up close to the commons, because those have a nice evironment/feel to them. They built a bunch of new MC halls down by the parking lot, you're kinda set along the outside edge of the whole community... doesn't look fun, but they built those after my fr. year.

i visited my cuzin at mesa court one school day afternoon. The dorm was pretty and clean but seemd empty n boring w/ barely any1. My cuzin therefore recommended me to dorm at ME. For some reason she said MC ppl usually go out n party more while the ME ppl hang out in the dorm n r more school spirited?? (she lives in Puente which is like phase 2)

However my friend lives in Aldor of ME n said he hates it there n he likes the setup of MC cuz itz easier to socialize... i have no idea wat to choose now.

i'll most likely be hanging out w/ ppl in my dorms so i dont want to be in a dorm like my cuzin - so empty and sad.

BTW which one do u guys prefer? coed or single gender suite?
At Explorer UCI most ppl went to look at ME dorm for some reason.

I doubt there's much of a difference between how many people go "off campus to party" between ME and MC.

I didn't know they had Co-Ed suites now. That's awesome. What do they do for that- have 2 different bathrooms in the suite?

Well, the word my few first years was always MC was so much better, but now with all the construction there might have been a change/shift in attitudes. I would say just go with your gut. It's not the biggest deal in the world.

Do they both have the same stuff though? Like... same amount of volleyball courts (as an example)

not sure about amount, I know for a fact that MC has volleyball (sand) and Basketball..... and ME has basketball too, but I'm not sure if i've actually seen a volleyball court there/or remember there being one, but i'm pretty sure there is.

MC also has a little rec room w/ a big screen TV, pool tables, arcade games, ping pong tables. Its the same room as where your mailboxes are. I don't know what the ME lounge looks like.

Can anyone explain the whole dorm situation to me? Do you room with one person and is that room is part of a place with other rooms and a common room? How many bathrooms are there? what is the definition of suite at UCI? Are they all coed or single?

For all of your questions it depends because housing at UCI is not all the same. Usually you live with one other person, a suite is 10ish people with a small common room and a bathroom but there is a large common room for the whole dorm. Once again, it depends on the dorm though, but they are all sort of like that.

yeah, the layout of a smaller dorm is there are 2 enterences, that open into a main big room. Usually there is are some couches here and a TV. Then branching from that main room are halls that lead to suites. Suits are about 4 rooms with 1 bathroom (has about 2 stalls and 2 showers & 2 sinks) and 1 little lounge area (with a couch and table and white erase board). Also banching from that main entrance room are stairs which go up to the next level where in some dorms the kitchen and another big lounge will be with more offshoots of halls/suites. Again, some are different. Some you enter on the top floor. Some are twice as big as others.

you will room with 1 or 2 other people. Sure hope you don't get in a 3some- they are a little crowded.

And for coed and single- can't answer. 4 years ago I never saw a coed suite. All dorms were coed though.

There is one all girls hall--Rivendell in Middle Earth, but that's it.

I decied on Mesa Court - Technology... gamer at heart

Is this true?

It's dumb to make that generalization because it's a whole different set of residents every year. Whether or not it's like that this year doesn't have a whole lot to do with what it'll be like next year, since they don't let people return to the res halls after their first year.
