Me vs. CARNEGIE MELLON...

Currently, I am a high school junior (senior starting in the fall), and I plan on applying to CIT for early decision.

GPA: over 100 weighted, ~97 UW (1.1 weighting for AP, 1.05 for honors)
RANK: 5th/~590 as of the beginning of junior year but I probably dropped a few spots since then.
SAT: 1900, 1920, 2070. combined-2100 (CR 620, math 710, writing 770) note: for writing I had two 600s then a 770...will admissions officers be skeptical? I only studied some grammar for about 5 days haha..
SAT II: World History 600, Chemistry 770, Math 1 700, Math 2 680*
AP: World History 3, waiting on Chemistry (expected: 4-5), APUSH (expected: 3-4), and Lang/Comp. (no idea, but I passed)

EC: (years include senior year)
National Honor Society vice president
National Art Honor Society member
TRI-M Music Honor Society (2 years, possible position holder next year)
Chamber Orchestra (4 years)
Science contest club (sci. olympiad, etc., 2 years, possible VP)
Science club (science oriented service club; 10-treasurer, 11-fundraising captain, 12-station leader)
Marching Band (11th; had a violin solo [this is NOT the reason I joined])
CIA (our school's service club; 4 years)
Varsity Cross Country (10th and 12th; skipped 11th grade b/c of marching band)
Violin teacher-private lessons
First chair violinist (does this go here?)
Music award winner (9th grade)

Unfortunately I did not receive many awards...not much to win. There were small things like academic achievement in French but that's about it.

I'm trying to get a job at a local music store and I am volunteering at a local food pantry this summer.

schedule for next year: AP Bio, AP Lit, AP Physics (will be taking both exams), AP Calc AB (BC is not offered), and AP Environmental independently.

*I intend on retaking math 2 in the fall after actually studying for it.. -.-
Should I retake the SATs for a 4th time to try to improve critical reading and math? I haven't studied heavily for either because I'm stupid, but I don't know if it's worth it at this point.

PLEASE, if you are a current CMU student or applicant or anything, share your opinions. Thank you!:)

bumpbumpbump.

bummmmmmmmmmppppp

with CMU, it’s verrrry dependant on what school you’re applying to.

They say their average GPA is a 3.6, average SAT a 2070.
HOWEVER.

Their school of underwater environmental economics or something is probably easier to get into than your local state schools.

Then you have the big two, the School of Computer Science and School of Electrical/ computer Engineering, which rival any top universities in terms of selectivity.

ahahah, underwater environmental economics…

Well I’m basically applying to the most selective one so we’ll see how it goes. Thanks! I think.

edit: 5 chem, 5 lang/comp, 4 US

I think you will have pretty good chance for CMU. I am interest in CMU too. By the way, how come you get your AP scores so early? I am still waiting for mine.

thanks! Do you have any thoughts on whether I should do early decision or not? I don’t know if the chances are any better for ED, i looked up some stats and they might be worse:\
I called for them. It costs $8 but it was soooo worth it. You need your AP number, a credit card, your SS# if you gave it in, and your birth month/day. The number is 888-308-0013 or 609-771-7366 for international I believe.

Compsci and Electrical Engineering are extremely difficult to get into. There were 2 kids who were accepted from my school this year, and one of them is going to MIT. ECs are very good but your scores should be better for those schools.
~60% chance

I’m not doing either so there’s a little less pressure. Any idea how much better? I fall within the middle 50% for SATs and I know I have to retake the math SAT II… AP scores from this year help though, thank goodness.

If you can get a 2200 on one test youll be a lock. Superscore is most likely good enough right now though.

Hm fair enough. I could, but I need to retake SAT IIs also. Wouldn’t taking the SATs 4 times look kind of bad? They ask for every single score anyway.

In that case I would not take it again. Didn’t know they asked for every test
