I am an incoming freshman (on-campus) that signed up for the most expensive meal plan (Bruin Premier 19 I believe its called). Anyways, I did this at the recommendation of a worried parent but now I am realizing that a cheaper meal plan might work better and be more cost effective. Does anyone know the cost differences in meal plans for undergraduate/on-campus students. Im in-state BTW and on Financial aid (quite a bit). Also, what meal plan do you recommend and why?

Thanks!!

P.S. I will also email housing about this.

If you’re getting Premier, it’s probably best to get 19 per week. Those extra ~170 swipes (34 weeks x 5 per week) cost only $195. If you don’t want premier, it’s probably better to get 14 or 11 so that you can eat away from the hill sometimes and don’t lose swipes every week.

If you’re going to eat breakfast every day then the extra swipes will be most cost effective.

Thanks for the chart/advice!!

on a separate note: I do eat a lot so while maybe I have a concerned parent, practicality also plays a prominent part in the decision. Should I stick with bruin Premier 19 if I decide to eat a lot at UCLA? Or would off campus/student union be cheaper?

Thanks!!

Question
What is the difference between the premier meal plans and the non-premier meal plans?

Answer
The Premier meal plans have a few extra features. The Premier meal plans offer a set number of meals at the beginning of each quarter and allow you to “carry over” any unused meals throughout the quarter. Additionally, the premier meal plans allow you to visit the Residential Restaurants more than once per meal period or use your plan for a guest meal. Students must monitor their meal usage throughout the quarter to ensure that they have enough meals to last through to the end of the quarter.

Throughout the quarter, students with premier meal plans may utilize their available meal swipes to purchase take out pizzas. The My Pizza program is offered by Dining Services and you can access additional information at http:[UCLA MyPizza](UCLA MyPizza). An additional feature of the premier meal plan allows students to exchange any unused meals at the end of the quarter for drinks such as water and juices. Flyers will be posted in the Residential Restaurants and building lobbies towards the end of each quarter. For additional information or questions on these features, you can access the Dining Services web site at http://www.dining.ucla.edu/.

It really depends on the individual. If you want some numbers though…

Using 11 meals per week as the baseline:
14 ~ $1.85 per extra swipe, $190 total
19 ~ $1.20, $325
14P ~ $5.20, $530
19P ~ $2.65, $725
Other places ~ $5+, ???

Keep in mind that the per swipe cost goes up if you don’t actually use the swipes. You’re more likely to end up using them all if you have premier. You’re less likely to use them all if you end up eating away from the dorms anyway (and this costs you extra money too).

I think you can change between quarters, so if you don’t like your original choice it shouldn’t be too costly.
