I usually eat really quick, cheap, healthy breakfast and lunches (less than about $4.00 total for both) that I can make in the kitchen at Hume. So from an economic standpoint, I feel like the meal plan doesn't make sense, especially since I would rather eat my breakfasts and lunches than the dining hall's. However, since the dining hall is also a social thing, is it worth missing out on meeting up with friends in the dining hall? Door prices for the dining centers are absolutely ridiculous, $8.49 for lunch and $8.99 for dinner, which is only $5 cheaper than the cost of the meal plan per day. So what does everyone think? Don't get the meal plan, save money, eat a better variety of food, and cut risk of the freshman 15, but potentially miss a huge amount of social bonding? Or spend the money and get the meal plan, have easy access to food, and not have to awkwardly say "Don't worry guys, I'll just be at some other place while you guys eat here..."?

Do not get the meal plan by any means. (and I’m a parent). After calculations, we told our son he could go to the dining hall at any time for any small amount at the hugest price and it would still be a lot cheaper in the long run. Don’t miss social events if occur and don’t angst over the price of admission–it’s still cheaper without the meal plan.
My son is in Hume–and it always sounds like the social events are in the floor kitchen. If you can cook, you’ll never lack for friends!

if you go fewer than 3 times a day every day, you lose money on it.

plus whether your friends like the dining hall or not is a total crapshoot. no one i regularly ate with my freshman year liked the dining hall.

I think that is a no :P

Okay, thank you all, that was really helpful!! I’m probably not going to get the meal plan, it just doesn’t seem to be worth it.
