My son is now at WOW and having a great time. When does his meal plan officially start, this week or next? He has the freedom plan, so if he doesn.t eat in the cafeteria this week will he lose those 8 meals? Or is next week the official start? THANKS

^^ Good question! I’m curious, too. I hope they show them how the meal plans work. My daughter had asked me before I left for home and I just had no idea. I know it’s probably somewhere here on the Cal Poly website or maybe in Poly Live.

I’m pretty sure it started on 13th.

The meal plan starts this week. Chances are, they will use some or all of their meals up. But if they do not, for this week only, the meals will role over to next week. At least thats how it worked last year. So just keep track of the number of times you eat a meal in one of the dining halls on campus. I think everyone gets like 15 meals during wow week or something.

A few years ago at WOW, the meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) were taken care of by the WOW fees, so there was no need to use the meal plan. Like NTKS17, my sons dining plan started during WOW week, but he began using the meal plan right after WOW ended (the weekend before classes) and the first week of classes. Might be a good idea to call campus dining and ask, as they have been very helpful to me.

Back when I did WOW (letseehere, that was '06… so… 4 years ago. Wow…), the situation was pretty much as eduparent described it. The WOW fees covered the first week’s meals. I can’t remember if the “Plu$ dollars” accessible during WOW or now. I think they were, but I’m not sure. However, things may have changed since I went through. Of course, nearly all campus dining establishments take cash and debit/credit.

Hey, another parent here worried if my son is eating…I looked on the website and found the Dining Plan Contract:

DINING PLAN SCHEDULE. Fall Quarter Dining Plan meals begin with dinner on Monday, September 13, 2010 before the start of the Week of Welcome (“WOW”), and ends with dinner on Friday, December 10, 2010.

I’m thinking this means in the dinnng venues, although, I hear there have been some group breakfasts and event food provided with WOW/Launch fees.

I haven’t heard back from him, but he is going to stop into a campus food place to see if he needs to use some dining credits before Friday night.

I think it is a combo of meals provided by WOW and dining plan credits. I asked this question during SOAR and was told the meal plan did start during WOW. Having said this, a texting conversation with D today revealed she was going through the ‘reserve’ food supply in her room rather quickly since ‘they are not feeding us a whole lot’. I probed a bit further and there seems to be an issue with healthy food availability. Maybe not all the venues are open yet. My concern is that during this week they will be much to busy to ride a bike over to Albertson and do some shopping if needed.

If you check the Campus Dining/Hours of Operation, they show regular hours starting Monday, the first day of classes. Below that are the limited hours for WOW week and this weekend. The WOWees usually have a set schedule of where to go for their WOW meals, often times its 19 Metro because they can handle that many students at once. So now with limited hours and places open, there may not be so many choices, until Monday. The WOWees might be so busy that they dont have much time to grocery shop until this weekend, when it dies down a bit. For healthy alternatives, just check around all of the eateries, not just the ones for the dining credits starting next week. The Plus Dollars can be used at any campus dining location, whereas the dining credits are good at certain places.

While on the Campus Dining page, you can check New Specialty Food Options and each individual restaurants menus (it will expand starting next week). For some places, the menu changes each week, which is kinda nice. Hope you can find some some healthy alternative foods as there may not be that much variety on campus. Every year Campus Dining seems to change things or restaurants in order to improve their menus, so not sure whats in store for this academic year.
