Meal plans and campus food

So, who here can provide some insight into the campus food?

I'm not going to judge based on what's available at the summer orientation sessions, because, come on.. they're going to put their best food forward for everyone.

Right now I'm planning to live on campus, but depending what my assignment is I may look for off campus housing instead.. so I'll definitely wait on that before deciding on a meal plan.

That said, how is the food at Top of Lenoir / Ram Cafeteria?

If I do live in campus, I'd likely do the Unlimited plan with some flex or the 200 Block + some flex.

Anyone who's already transferred have any insight into which plan works out the best? I expect to spend most of my time on campus.

DO NOT get the unlimited meal plan. If you’re gonna get anything, get the 105 meal plan.

I didn’t get one at all, but I was still able to go the dining hall whenever I wanted because other people have so many meals left.

Is that really enough to sustain me for an entire semester?

I thought you could only treat people to meals on your plan if you got the “block” plans… which was one of the reasons I was considering it

But, I’m planning to spend a significant amount of my time on campus (my course load will dictate that), so can you elaborate on why the unlimited plan a bad idea?

In doing the math, without any flex taken into account, there’s like a $150 difference between the 200 block and unlimited.

The 105 block is DEFINITELY enough–no one believes this at first, but nearly everyone switches to the smallest plan their sophomore year after having like 60 extra meals each semester freshman year. If you live off campus, don’t even bother getting a meal plan at all.

Yeah 105 block works. I lived on campus right near Lenoir and at one point was treating all my senior friends to Lenoir lunches and dinners because I had like 30 meals left over with a week of school left.

two words: franklin street

105 works best for me. food sucks in the dining halls anyways you’re not going to want to eat it. except for hanging out with your friends. if you join a fraternity then you can get a good meal plan at your house and the food is way better.

How many meals does that work out to per day though throughout the semester?

How many ‘school days’ are there in an academic semester?

I mean, I would be planning to eat all three meals either on campus or someplace right around campus almost every school day, and at least some of the weekends.

As far as cafeteria food, as long as they have salads and chicken and the like I should be good. I eat pretty healthy.

I got the 150 meals and did pretty well. Pushed to use them up 1st semester, but used them all 2nd. I’m contemplating getting more flex and switching to the 105 though. More variety, but I have to do more planning.

What I tell everybody about the dining halls: It’s food. Nothing special about it.

Granville sells meal plans to non-residents as well, and the food is MUCH better than you get on campus.

105 will be just fine. Don’t do math to figure out how much you’ll be eating because all that flies out the window once classes start.

I’m a pretty math oriented person though, so that’s kind of hard to avoid for me ;)

If I’m not getting the unlimited it’s important to me to know how many meals that works out to each semester, so I have an idea of what some additional money on a Flex account would cover each semester.

Does anyone know how many days are in a semester?

First semester I did the 200 I think, which was way too much. Second semester I got the 150, but still had the 200 mindset that made me think I had to eat at the dining hall all the time to use the meals up and then ran short towards the end of the semester.

I’ll probably go 150 again this semester, but I’m planning to cook more for myself because the dining hall just wears on you. It’s not bad neccessarily, its just the same all the time.

I’ll see how this semester goes, but if I can get my balance right, I’ll probably go down to 105 next semester.

I’ve heard of kids who do the 200 and run out because they eat at Rams/Lenoir all the time and I’ve heard of kids who skipped the meal plan and ate on Franklin every night for a year.

How is the food though?

I went by the campus yesterday to try to check out Top of Lenoir and it was closed, the guy said it’d be closed all summer except for special events.

Which dining hall is open for the summer session?

I’d like to check out the food before the summer orientation sessions, since I suspect the food they put out for that will be better than what’s

I still need to find out how many days are in the semester so I can work on how many meals each plan works out to per semester.

Now I’m thinking I’ll probably do the 200 at most and then use the rest of the $ to flex for some variety…

_ken, there are 15 weeks in a semester, so if you get the Block 150, that’s 10 meals a week, and if you get the Block 200, that’s about 13 meals a week. I’m guessing that the Block 150 would be ideal for someone who doesn’t eat breakfast or makes their own. The food in Rams Head is pretty good with decent variety, but I’m sure students grow tired of it after a while. I’m not sure about summer sessions, but I would recommend checking the Dining Services website to see what’s available.

The thing is if you try to work out the math it’s inevitably going to be wrong. When you get to UNC you’re going to join clubs, meet for study groups, etc. and will be grabbing food on the go (ie with Flex dollars) probably more than you’ll expect. Do not expect to be eating 3 meals a day at the dining hall every day because it absolutely won’t happen. You probably won’t even eat 2 meals a day there by the end of the year.

ken the food f’kin sucks. Dont worry about going and trying to see what its like before you decide to buy it. The food is downright terrible, but even though it sucks you still will want to buy a meal plan. I recommend 105. There are better dining options like granville, fraternity house if you join one, franklin street and whoever delivers. The only part of campus dining that i would even maybe possibly use the word good for is breakfast at lenoir. But don’t get me wrong that can be pretty crappy too. If i were you i would stay away from top of lenoir and eat at mainstreet instead where you can get chickfila and subway.
