Meal Plans and Flex Dollars

Read in TSL (Pomona's student newspaper) that sometimes students are left with a surplus of flex dollars. Is that so? What is the best meal plan to choose?

Meal Plan A - 16 meals & $160.00 flex dollars
Meal Plan B - 12 meals & $120.00 flex dollars
Meal Plan C - 12 meals & $225.00 flex dollars

Thanks!

It really depends on your child's habits. If she is not a breakfast eater EVER then 12 meals a week could well be sufficient. Say, on Tuesday afternoon, she grabbed lunch at the sagehen cafe (you pay in flex dollars) rather than at the dining hall. Then, on Friday night, she went out for dinner. She would then be eating 12 meals that week-- 2 each on M, W, and Th, Sa., and Sun, and 1 each on T and F. (There are only 2 meals served on weekends-- brunch and dinner.) If you have run out of meals for the week but want to eat in the dining hall, you can use flex dollars to get in.

I suppose some people end up with extra flex $, but I don't think I ever did. I bought granola bars, fruit leather, gum, cold drinks on hot days, etc. Also since you use flex in the sagehen cafe (classy food), and the coop (more of a burger/fry joint), you can find that you might spend quite a lot in one sitting. If the semester is ending and you have a lot of flex left, then you can go to the coop store and stock up on nonperishable stuff for the following semester. Or, take your friends out for a meal at the sagehen cafe-- at least some of them will be flex-less and will appreciate it a lot.
