My son is probably going to be staying in Hume Hall this fall. What meal plan would you recommend given its location relative to restaurants and dining halls? He is unlikely to cook anything for himself, and he doesn’t eat much of a breakfast other than a bagel. I could see him eating at one of the dining halls for lunch if he’s near it for class, but I worry that he won’t walk the 1/3 mile to Gator dining at dinner.
My son is a freshman living in Hume East. I put money in his account and he uses it wherever he wants on or off campus. This has worked out very well for us. The meal plan would have limited his options and we’re spending about the same amount. He always eats out and never cooks, but Hume has kitchens in the common rooms.
He can have a small frig and microwave in his room. Don’t get the meal plan. Note that if you do the meal plan you are stuck with it for both semesters.
He’s more likely to eat at the Reitz Union, than the dinning halls, which is closer to Hume.
Wing Zone, Wendys, Papa Johns, Panda Express, Croutons Hand-Crafted Salads, Pollo Tropical, Subway, Freshens, Arredondo Cafe, Starbucks and P.O.D. Market.
My son’s roommate had a meal plan, so we also got one. It’s kind a worked out, in that he is more likely to go to the dinning hall with his roommate, than without. If his roommate didn’t have the plan, we wouldn’t have gotten it.
The meal plan only makes sense if he eats at least once a day in the dinning halls. Otherwise don’t get one.
When we did the math it only made sense if your kid eats a lot and all three meals. You don’t need a meal plan to eat at the Reitz (which has a lot of options).
Thank you all for the excellent input!
