Meal Plans

When are we supposed to choose and pay for our meal plans? How do we do it?

you get it automatically with your housing contract. it's included in that price and you can't opt out of it. you'll be automatically given the Any 13 plan and if you odn't like it, you got one month to change it. I tried the Any9 plan, hated it, and then moved to the all entree plus.

which meal plan do most people get?

13 is the default, but it definitely depends on how you live.

If you always eat at the dining hall, then you take the Any 13 plan, which gives 13 meal credits in a week. the any 9 plan give 9 credits per week, and also give you 200 entree plus for the semester. If you are ever at the michigan union or pierpont commons(North campus), that can come useful.

I had a classmate that lived in oxford. He got the all entree plus plan because he would rarely eat in the dining halls. since oxford didnt really have one.

Whats this thing with 'swipes'?

You swipe everytime you enter the dining hall
Swipe=1 Meal Credit

Just don't get the unlimited unless you live right by the dining hall and don't ever go out.

Thanks. I'm staying at oxford (no dining hall) so I might change my Any 13 to an Any 9 with $200. But Would the Any 135 be better as you get the same $200 with the same number of meals (I think) and and left over meals get carried over to the next term...and it's more flexible.

Any 135 is better than Any 9. Same number of meals overall, but you don't have to worry about losing meals if you don't spend exactly 9 every week. You also don't lose any meals because you're out of town for study break, thanksgiving, spring break, home early from finals, etc. Also, with Any 9 you're limited to 3 "Guest meals", which you can use to treat other people. With any 135, you can basically do that as many times as you want.

So if you're really cheap, the 135 plan includes lots of cheap dates.
Meal tickets, on the other hand, cost like $9 for lunch and $12 for dinner. NOT WORTH IT.

How common do students switch from the default meal plan of "Any 13." If you are living in the dorms, and plan on eating regularly, would it be a good idea to go with a different plan? Perhaps the Flex 13?

The Flex 13 is a good idea because it includes Entree Plus - which you'll need for doing laundry, eating in the snack bars and at the Unions.
