Meal plans

Can anyone tell me when new freshmen are supposed to choose their meal plans?

After you get your dorm assignment.

Thanks. I was told by someone that they automatically sign you guys up for (and forgive me if this is totally erroneous) a 14-meal a week plan, and then you can go in and change it.

To a current NYU student: Is the fourteen meal plan worth it?

You are automatically enrolled in a 14 meal plan. Unless you are in an apt. (UHall or 3rd North) you are required to have a minimum of 14 meals/week.

no, the minimum required is the 10 meal per week or 175 per semester for traditional dorms
NYU > Department of Housing

i think the minimum is 10 meals/week or the 175 flex

I'm in UHall. I can opt out of it I want. Is 10-14 or however many worth it? I can cook and what not.

My kid hopes to be in UHall (Aoibheal, how do you know where you are already?) and plans to be able to cook most of the time. However (and I say this as a mom!) you guys should be realistic as far as how often you will cook.

I cook all my own meals already, but yeah, sometimes it's fun to be lazy and/or eat something already made. =D

thats if u applied for explorations then u can find out now

I lived in Uhall last year, and the 10 meals/week seemed like wayyyyy too much for me personally. I utilized the kitchen for breakfast and dinner, usually.

Oh, cool. Since you lived all the way in Uhall, was it a bit of an inconvenience to find and/or travel to dining halls to eat?

The 3 best dining halls are clustered around Washington Sq, so you could easily grab lunch at one of them. Otherwise, if you're in UHall or 3rd North I'd advise against a mealplan, and just mooch off other people or pay (about $9 a meal, which is what you're paying if you're on the mealplan but without the obligation to use your allotment).

Aoibheal, quite the contrary. Palladium is right next door, which by the way is GREAT. I highly recommend Sunday Brunch. I ate about 85% of my meals there. The other 15% I would say I did at the ones at Wash Square between or after classes.

Just a note from experience: If you are in Tisch drama (or another school that has a lot of classes in far off places or classes that run late at night) or don't wake up early in the morning, meal plans are rarely worth it. I usually made it for about 1 meal a day but mostly I wasn't around when the dining halls were open. I had something like 90 meals left over at the end of the semester and I chose the lowest possible plan for my dorm situation. Also the only one really with great food is Kimmel and I could only eat there 2 days a week because of classes.

Yep yep I concur, as another Tisch Drama student. That's why I'm not getting a meal plan next year...I'm just going to get a bunch of Zatarain's from home (where it's a lot cheaper) and other things from Trader Joe's/Food Emporium/Whole Foods and cook haha. Things like dirty rice and jambalaya don't get old for me.

I LOVE Zatarain's, NOCCA Junior! But I also love homemade shrimp jambalaya, made from a recipe that I wrote down when I used to watch a cooking show featuring Louisiana chef Justin Wilson. I used to love when he would say "Un-YUN! Get on in there." :) (Justin was before your time, so you probably don't remember him. But your mom might!;))

Haha loves it! I don't know, I'll ask her. My mom and grandma collectively taught me how to make things like gumbo, jambalaya, stuffed bell peppers, crawfish etoufee, etc...but obviously I won't have time to cook all these things from scratch the majority of the time. But Zatarain's will definitely do. Defs. Pralines aren't very hard to make, so maybe I'll have those every other weekend lol.

On average, how many meals per week are the different flex plans?

And I saw a pic of sushi on the NYU dining sight. Do they serve Japanese food in one of the dining halls?

How is restaurant night at Palladium?
