I know at most residence halls theres a required meal plan, but i noticed for Fluor Tower you can pick the Cardinal (dinner at EVK?) or Gold plan (dinner at Parkside?). Which is the better place to eat? EVK? or Parkside?

Parkside...but you will get tired of either....I would go with a little higher level meal plan that allows you to eat at some of the other on campus eateries such as commons, trojan grounds, and cafe 84

yeh i've been wondering about that either. and i would get the more expensive one, but i'm not a big eater at all......i have a pretty small appetite so i don't know if i should get it.
also freshmen 15!!!
i'm gonna try my hardest to avoid that!!

I'm so scared of the freshmen 15. I hear some people can get up to freshmen 30.

is the more expensive meal plan (the one that's just worth money at any restaurant) worth the extra cost? my parents don't care and i wasn't too thrilled with parkside, so i was leaning toward the Trojan plan (i think that's the name of it).

Get the cheapest meal plan available, and see how it works out. If you need more you can change second semester. Two years ago we got the plan that was for 10 meals a week and gave our son cash to use elsewhere. That worked out fine. He told us that many of the students had money left at the end of the semester and were buying cases of Pepsi for the caps to be used for music downloads or something like that and throwing the soda away.

would it be worth the more expensive meal plan if I'm a big coffee and soda drinker, that way I can use my meal plan for those expenses?

I'm not saying you need the most expensive meal plan, people often times have money left over at the end of the semester, and it doesn't roll over. But-you will likely want to eat more than just the food available at the cafeterias. Of course, if you are planning on joining a frat or sorority they have cooks for all their meals, so you can just eat at your house. In that case, you might not need anything but the basic plan, but still, its nice to have some options.

As far as the freshman 15, it's not the food that gives it to you-it's the alcohol. Realize that with all the drinking freshman do (likely more than you will drink any other year) they are sometimes consuming double their daily calorie consumption in drinks alone. When you go out 3-4 nights a week like many students do, all those extra calories add up, and voila! freshman 15. The other big contributing factor in my opinion is the late night food. When you are staying up late (either for drinking or studying) it's easy to get the 2 am munchies, and at that point in time, about all that's open is Wendys, Del Taco, and Chanos. Not exactly the most healthy food, and then you go to sleep, so it turns straight to fat. Just watch the extra drinks and exercise regularly and you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

what are freshmen 15 and 30?

freshman 15 is the term that people give to the amount of weight (in pounds) that most people gain in their first year of college.

haha what's the remedy for lots of drinking? EMPTY STOMACH. of course it's easy to get drunk. but i drink to get drunk once to twice a week, and yeh i've still managed to remain relatively skinny because i tend not to eat beforehand so i only have to drink a couple of drinks to get drunk. and i'm talking about cocktails cause the place i go to, you pay like $10 for open bar but no shots...so if you drink shots it's less $$ so i hope what you're saying is i won't get freshmen 15l.
ok ignore what im saying cause im kinda tipsy right now...i have a feeling i would want to erase this post later.
i just went to my friend's prom and drank like 8 cocktails. i hope that doesn't add up toooo mcuh for my calorie count...............
omg and i had munchies....a kebab...it's the best........................................!!!!

My game plan for avoiding the freshmen 15 is to not eat everything in sight. I must say that I love food so being surrounded by all kinds of food in the dining hall will just kill me. I'm probably only get a certain amount of food and not allow myself to go back for any seconds. And about the alcohol. I'll probably just eat less that day to compensate for it. And I'm gonna try to exercise regularly.

they have a cool waffle maker in EVK haha. I don't know if i can resist that.

I have a huge phobia with the freshmen 15. I am already making precautions now to get ready for it.

HAHHA nymph. let's jus say.. i know how you feel.

i dont think people should be that scared of the freshman 15. i went to a residential high school so its kind of the same thing. alot of people gain weight when they're living away from home, but like trojangirlie said, avoid late night snacking and workout regularly. and yea, i also reccomend drinking on an empty stomach. not too good for you but ehh. good way to get plastered without the extra calories.

Actually, it's a really bad idea to drink on an empty stomach.

Not that any of this really matters, because most of you, regardless the advice any of us older, wiser posters give you, are going to have to figure this out on your own. Most freshman have 1 or 2 (or for some idiots, lots more) scary, way too drunk moments while they learn their limits. And if you drink with an empty stomach, you are basically setting yourself up for one of those moments. Not to mention, when you then get drunk, you will likely forget your clever plan and eat really crappy drunk food.

No matter how much you may or may not have dranken in high school, its a very different situation to have people shoving alcohol in your hand every time your turn around. My advice is just to take it slow until you learn your limits, but like I said, this is one of those things where most people have to burn their hand on the stove in order to know that its hot.

hahahaha i've definitely had my fair share of sheer stupidity with drunk moments. actually way too many, having people carrying me and passing out...barf, etc. ew.

but for me, on empty stomach, downing 4 cocktails (or shots) is just right to get me on the good high. so i stick to that =) haha yeh i'm a pretty light drinker. i'm a small girl, what can i say?!

the thing is i personally don't LIKE drinking that much (unless they're really yummy cocktails, but that = calories!...and not to say damn $$!), but i do indeed drink for the tipsiness. so for me, i hope to drink less to achieve that. on the otherhand, if you're supposed to be drinking the whole time at the party...just hold the drink and sip slowly so you don't end up overdrinking. hell drinking on empty stomach is bad for your body...drinking in general is bad for it already. and i do stuff more harmful anyways -_-"

and my kebab munchie was soooo NOT crappy drunk food. =p i wouldn't mind traveling an hour just for that good stuff. ahahaha

uhhm. i'm well aware that drinking on an empty stomach is not a good thing. probably shouldn't do it. but yea. i don't overdo it, like nymph said. small asian girls can't take much as it is.

buttt back to the original topic. does anyone know what the meal plan options for birnkrant or new/north are?

you can only choose cardinal and trojan for new/north and birnkrant...
gold is for parkside

I just took my OLCC training class ot get my OLCC liscense, which enables me to serve beer and alchohol. It is actually better to drink on an empty stomach because it takes your body less time to sober you up. If you drink 1 drink and hour your liver wil be albe to digest it and therefor you will be sober within each hour. Once you add food it blocks the flow of the alcohol and it actually makes your drunker. So If you go drinking don't eat!
