meal plans

Is it worth it to pay for a meal plan at Ga Tech? There are a few colleges in Florida that require freshman to get meals plans their first year. Is it required at Tech?

My s will be living on campus, by the way. Thanks ofr any input!

I think it’s part of “freshman experience”.

If you sign up for Freshman Experience then it’s required.
The “unlimited” and “unlimited +5” plans also come with Buzz Funds and a gift card that you can use at any rest. on campus and the bookstore B&N.
From the website it also looks like you can use your meal plan at the Food Court too,so you’re not really limited to the 2 Dining Halls only with the plans.
The plans that aren’t “unlimited” give you a certain amount of meals per week during specific times and I think you can only use those plans at the dining halls. They don’t carry over.
Check out their website.
I think you can also change plans before classes begin if you change your mind or later with stipulations

Glad to see someone else asking this question.

Friends who young people go to other schools say the most they went for for meal plans was two meals a day and the rest of the express card. Thing is you have to take into consideration the number of vacation/non school days.

Most people have said their sons/daughters ate breakfast in their rooms and liked the flexibility of a card they could use other places such as on the weekend.

Many also indicated that students get bored with the regular food and its nice to have access or the ability to eat other things other places.

where else can you get unlimited food for <15.00 a day???
( est.- say about 18wks/126 days for 1555.00)

To each his own though-it’s a personal thing.
Looking forward to not having to think about eating/cooking/cleanup-Just sit down/eat/and GO!!!

Dining halls are open on the week ends and Holidays ((11am-8pm) - just not during Thanksgiving/ Christmas/Semester breaks I think

I found a lot of information here;

Had to figure all this out just last night

When I was a freshman (2004), I ate about 18-20 meals/wk in the dining hall, so it was a pretty good deal for me. I think most people eat less, somewhere around 10-15/wk and just eat out with friends or skip breakfast.

I definitely enjoyed the convenience of not having to cook or buy groceries, but after a while, you do want to eat something different/new. For what it’s worth, most people will agree that breakfast is the best meal served in the dining halls.

You also should consider what dorm you’ll be in. Most of the traditional dorms/suites only have one kitchen per floor, and as I recall you can only have a mini-fridge in your room. The apartments, of course, have their own kitchens. When I moved to an on-campus apartment, I dropped the meal plan and took care of meals myself. If you’re fairly frugal and don’t eat out too much, it’s not that much more expensive to live an apartment and cook your own food. Though I don’t think freshman can get apartments, but things may have changed since I left GT.

What a timely post! I was just going over meal plans at GT with my son and having a tough time figuring it out. There’s some good advice here.

I’m very new to this so there’s a lot I don’t know about how this process works. Let’s say I pick a meal plan…how do I pay for it? Do I have to pay up front or does it go on his account and the financial aid we receive will cover it?

It is included in the Estimated Cost of Attendance breakdown.
Amount covered would depend on the amount of the FinAid award you got.
Signed up for plan when Housing App was filled out.
All Cost of attendance is due on a specific date in August ( sorry- not in front of me right now)
Going with : Cost of Attendance = FinAid Award Amount = Covered

Now waiting on the Financial Aid Office to “Go on to next step” ( Understanding all the specifics) now that Acceptance Deposit has been paid
Anxiously waiting…

So that means I don’t have to pay out of pocket for it right now? Then I can go ahead and help the boy sign up for the meal plan and pick a room.
I already paid the housing deposit (had to be paid by May 1) as well as the acceptance deposit (also May 1), and I paid for those on my credit card…I didn’t want to put anything else on there if I don’t have to.
I will call my financial aid counselor on Monday and see if she’s got the final numbers for me and she can walk me through this.
THanks for the info!

If you’ve already paid your acceptance deposit -and- your Housing Pre-payment, the next step would be to sign up for Housing. The link above will get you there.

Pick your dorms (6 choices) and pick/sign up for your meal plan.
*They say you need to do this by May 1 to guarantee Housing

Yeah- you don’t have to pay that out of pocket now ( meal plan). Looks like you’re ready to go on to the next step with Fin-Aid too.

Sign into you’re OSCAR/Buzzport account to do this -or- just check above link
