I know this has been asked before but the search button isn't helping me that much. I want to change my meal plan and I'm not sure what I have, but I would like to know what plan all of you have? Is the 175 flex plan good and popular among NYU students? Or are there others? I'm looking for one that won't have me relying on dining hall food that much (because I heard people get sick of it fast).

Yeah I was having the same problem but I went with the 175 flex. The way I see it is that with the weekly plans if you don’t eat your allotted number a week they just disappear. At least with the flex you can eat them with you want. Plus, like you, I don’t want to eat dorm food all the time. I plan on going home on the weekends once in a while (I live on Staten Island) and eating there. I’m gonna buy cereal bars and stuff to keep in my room so I don’t need a meal for breakfast, and I’ll probably buy microwavable things to keep in a mini-fridge for quick meals.

All-in-all, I think the 175 works out best if you don’t want dining food every day. I believe it falls a bit short of two meals a day for the entirety of the semester. I’m no expert though obviously, since I’m making the decision for the first time just like you are.

Yeah I chose 175 flex as well. Lauren it does run short of the entire semester for 2 meals a day but I plan on eating out onweekends and having stuff in the mini fridge. There’s also a lot of opportunities to get free food (see- welcome week)

I always thought the flex plan is better since you don’t lose the unused meals each week. However, excel gave an interesting view of the whole meal plan.

Assuming there are about 14 weeks in the semester and reducing the cost of the meal plan by the amount of dining dollars (which varies from $100 - $250 and just muddies up the calc):

225 flex works out to 16 meals/wk at $8.40/meal
175 flex works out to 12.5 meals/wk at $9.43/meal
113 flex is 8 meals/wk at $10.04/meal
75 flex is 5.4 meals/wk at $10.69/meal
19 meals/wk plan is $7.17/meal
14 meals/wk plan is $9.06/meal
10 meals/wk plan is $11.07/meal

The striking fact is that, when you go up from the 14 meal to 19 meal/wk plan, the extra 5 meals/wk are only costing you $1.90/meal.

If you live nearby and will be going home a lot, you won’t need the bigger meal plan. If you’re a drama student and have studio 3 days/wk, you won’t be able to have lunch in a dining hall, although anyone can get a “to-go” box to take food for later. If you’re eating out with friends alot, you won’t use that big of a plan. But get familiar with the way the meal plan works. You can eat at any dining hall plus other places on campus using your meal plan. Dining dollars are used like cash to buy goodies at university convenience stores and other places. Meal exchange allows you to use your meal plan at the Weinstein Food Court.

You have until September 19 to change your meal plan, so see how much you use it those first three weeks you’re there.

Thanks for the spreadsheet stuff. Very interesting. I’m glad I picked 175 flex over 10/week, as two bucks a meal makes a pretty big difference. I picked it since I’m not big on breakfast and I have to go home at least one weekend a month to go to work, so any more would be a waste. I bought granola bars and a coffeemaker so I won’t starve. Also my mom came up with the idea of basically embezzling crepes in those styrofoam to-go containers once every couple weeks then keeping them in my fridge for snacks/breakfast.

What is nice about the 175 flex is, you don’t lose your meals from week to week. You also have the dining dollars added to it. If at the end of the semester you run out of meals you can always use dining dollars or campus cash.

You can also get the to-go containers and store them for another meal…
