meaning of the number and letter after "Course Name"

we noticed that there are some numbers and/or letters in each Course name such as Math 3A, Statstics 12. Is there any way to distinguish the courses on the basis of these numbers and letters in terms of the content levels and requirements.
For example, what is difference between Statstics 12-1 and Statstics 10-1. Can a student to take both Statstics 12-1 and Statstics 10-1 because Statstics 12-1 is GE requirement and Statstics 10-1 is the Major Requirement although their contents are overlapped.

Yorur every information and suggestion is highly appreciated.

you need to look in the course catalog. For the statistics example you gave, http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/catalog/catalog13-14-772.htm</a> which you can access for any department from the page at http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/catalog/</a> The catalog explains what courses would not get credit because of duplicate coverage.
