Means of Survival

So I got this message from my school To-Do list
"Financial Aid Office: Means of Survival For The Year: The income reported on your application does not appear adequate to meet your living expenses. Please provide our office with a signed statement listing all sources of income used to meet living expenses."
Havent been able to call yet but i'm curious as to what might go on this as my grandmother pays half the rent of the home and we get state money for my two cousins whom we have taken in. However, I don't believe these are sources of income? Since I cant call the school this early I was wondering if I could get an idea on income sources they are looking for.

Write a letter and have your grandmother signed and get it notarized if they want it that way and sent to them.
Usually a letter from you signed by whoever was helping out along usually satisfies that requirement.

I’m sure you will get better suggestions tomorrow from more experienced members. But if the money on your FAFSA is clearly too low for you to live in a home and eat, then they need to understand how you meet your basic need and verify that is or is not supposed to be reported. That is called a discrepancy and they are required to inquire and resolve it. So I would start to gather a list of your household expenses and proof of how you meet that so that it all adds up. It doesn’t matter if they are official sources of income, they just need to know. If you have money from the state then there should be a record. If there is money from grandmother, then describe the amount and frequency, list the amount and frequency from the state. I don’t know if these are considered foster children or what but if they aren’t mentioned anywhere then you can include that. So what would go on is how you get money to live, anything not on your fafsa.

The college wants to know where your money is coming from for living expenses. Send them the information. They will not continue to process your aid until you do.

And just be prepared…you will need to document the money other family members are giving you.

You got a low income verification as the school wants to know how you meet your day to day expenses.

Start gathering your information including any income for your family (unless you are stating that you are totally living off of others; the monies from your grandmother and your cousin’s state benefits). Also include budged letters for public assistance/snap benefits/of foster care benefits that your family is receiving for your cousins.

Actually this has to go on the FAFSA under monies paid on your behalf

^^ The rent paid by the grandparent would not go on the FAFSA if it is a shared living situation with the grandmother living with the family and paying “her” share of the rent. OP should clarify this point.

It all depends on where grandma lives. If the OP lives with grandma, it is different than if grandma is paying 1/2 the rent elsewhere. Who is paying the OTHER half of the rent?
