Mechanical Engineering: CMU vs UC Berkley

Hi
I am having a hard time choosing between CMU and UCB with Regents for Mechanical Engineering. I have looked at the ranking but I dont exactly trust them. I also do not want an overly competitive environment. If we were to disregard the financial aspect, which of these schools should I choose?
thanks

bump bump…

If you don’t want an overly competitive environment, I’d definitely choose CMU. That’s actually one of the main reasons I chose to come here instead of one of a large engineering schools like Berkeley or UIUC. Engineering classes here are not graded on a harsh curve like I’ve heard about at Cal, and collaboration is greatly encouraged. There are tons of group projects, many (if not most) classes encourage collaboration on homework, and I have yet to see even a hint of competitiveness between engineering students here.

Furthermore, while Cal, being a larger engineering school, may have a greater number of companies recruiting on campus, the smallness of CMU (MechE has about 120 students per year) makes it pretty close-knit. It’s easy to get to know a good portion of the students in your department, and it’s also easier to talk with and get help from professors.

I can confirm this. I share the same sentiment as well.

Not an Engineering student, but yeah!
