Mechanical Engineering Internship

Someone said that:
"In general (so including engineering), the first co-op depends a lot on your GPA. When no one really has any experience, they'll sort out the to-be-interviewed resumes mainly on GPA and courses taken. After you get your first job, it stops mattering as much although a lot of jobs still have minimum cut-offs."

So, what courses is a mechanical engineering student expected to have on their resume before getting a co-op or internship position?

and What GPA?

Every response would be appreciated

Thank you

bump…

Companies want knowledge of basic engineering fundamentals such as: Statics, Thermo, Design, and programming.

A GPA above 3.7 will gey you an interview if you are a freshman or sophomore.

The problem is you wouldn’t have taken those courses like thermo and statics until the third year…

anyone???

This must depend on your program. My son is second year mech’e and took statics and thermo this year. He was not ahead of schedule on those.

^ Mine too.

daivinhtran1993, you should head over to the regular engineering forum to ask these questions. There are real engineers (I guess parents) who will be able to tell you more. I have looked at ads for internships and they usually want someone with a GPA of at least 3.0.

A large percent of ads seem to want Jrs and Srs. because by the end of Soph year, you will have taken enough Eng classes to actually offer them help with something.

There are schools eg RIT, Drexel, that do have students do coop earlier but I think those schools have connections with certain companies that they regularly work with so they take students earlier.

It would seem to me any work or volunteer experience that shows you have taken some responsibility or initiative would help your resume. Good luck.

Thank you so much, Lakemom !
